What is that crane truck doing on the carrier?!

I assume/hope it is just there for some work while the carrier is at port and that it won't be going along for the deployment? Otherwise that's one extra Rafale they could have taken with them at least!

I really do love the Rafale.

Its a shame France didn't manage to get the EU to lift its arms embargo against China a few years ago.

Had they managed it, I am sure China would have made a sizeable order for Rafales (probably with ToT and local licence production), and the Rafale would have been the PLAN's carrier fighter rather than China developing the J15.

What could have been!

Belgian and British helicopters integrated in Arromanches 2

If the mainstream media have widely reported the deployment of the Charles de Gaulle off the area of operations against Daech as part of the mission Arromanches 2, yet few have insisted that this force was international. Two other European countries participating in the naval squadron that accompanies the French nuclear aircraft carrier, Belgium and the UK, each using a frigate, and their embarked helicopters.

Thus three foreign rotorcraft will be able to interoperate with the Navy in the condition of conflict.

Belgium, it has deployed its first frigate Léopold (or F930), a warship specialized in anti-submarine and anti-ship. It thus carries torpedoes and Harpoon RGM-84 missiles. This building also has on board a helicopter SA-316B Alouette III used for reconnaissance missions, links, and medical evacuation.Leopold and his first shipborne helicopter must remain alongside the Charles de Gaulle until 4 January 2016.

As the UK is the frigate HMS Defender (or D36) that was sent to protect the French battle group.
This powerful warship is currently one of the most modern buildings in service in the Royal Navy. Specializing in air defense it has short and medium-range surface-to-air missiles Aster 15 and Aster medium-range missiles and long 30. It can also carry anti-ship missions. It also carries two helicopters for that mission: Lynx HMA Mk-8 and Merlin HM Mk a-2 anti-ship, anti-submarine and search-rescue. HMS Defender shall in turn follow the mission Arromanches 2 to completion.

Aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle
CDG.jpg

Ten days after the attacks in Paris, France has committed his aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle against Daech. Gerard Feldzer had the opportunity to share two days, the lives of the 1,900 crew members, embarked on this flagship of French Naval Aviation.

The first impression when you dropped me in a helicopter, it is this permanent wind on this gigantic bridge, because nuclear powered boat line at 50 kilometers per hour, which enables aircraft to take off more easily and each person on the bridge wears a helmet and a jacket of a specific color which corresponds to a function

The "yellow dogs" guide the aircraft on the ground, "green" are aircraft technicians, "red" take care of jet fuel, "red with black stripes" are in charge of armament, the "men white "are in charge of locking the aircraft on the catapult.

This allows catapult aircraft of 25 tonnes to reach 300 km / h in less than two seconds and take off on a runway under 75m
CDG 1.jpg

The aircraft carrier is accompanied by other boats that protect the like frigates equipped with anti-aircraft or submarine, nuclear submarine and a command-tanker ship.

Just for refueling aircraft is nearly 4 million liters that are stored on board

It seems a lot but then one Rafale take-off with afterburner consumes more than 400 liters per minute!

So if day and night missions succeed as now, the reserves do not allow to take several months. It is the same with the 600 tons of ammunition shipped on board, knowing that a single Rafale can carry up to 9 tonnes of bombs or missiles.

CDG 2.jpg
France therefore provides the international coalition considerable resources, since Charles de Gaulle, with its geographical proximity to Syria and strong of its 26 combat aircraft, its two lookout aerial vehicles: Hawkeye (identifiable by the large circular radar on his back), and 4 helicopters with a "Pedro *" will multiply the French strike force.

A very strong air activity, it also means permanent revisions, maintenance hangars and jobs that go with it. The blue personal example place the aircraft on deck, down by the lifts in the gigantic hangars, located below and to anticipate this demand to avoid traffic jams, if you want to catapult one plane every minute, we must anticipate and identify the aircraft as quickly as possible and in a specific order, the relay is then taken by the mechanics who take turns 24 on 24.

Take-off, they are supported by controllers on board, that guide and take delivery on a mission back.I met the Inspectors or shift supervisors walkway because the Navy opened to women who now account for about 10-15% of onboard personnel.

My heart stroke this week is obviously going to those women and men, who are all quite young, "the same age as the victims of the November 13", said to me yesterday one of the naval air pilots.

From Air controller to ** Pasha, they all have something in common: they are all sea lovers and proud to have been chosen to embark on this high technology flagship. And then one feels they want to share their passion as these young drivers that I met who nicknamed themselves "the sailors of the sky!"

* The pedro is a helicopter in flight which follows the boat landings and takeoffs at, ready to rescue a man at sea. It seems just about the first name of the first helicopter pilot who saved one of his colleagues during the Korean War.

** The Pasha is the nickname given to the captain of a ship. The name "Pacha" is mainly used in the

8UL8OrO.jpg

The French Navy (Marine Nationale) announced its Lafayette class frigate Surcouf (second ship of the class) launched an MBDA-made MM40 Block II Exocet anti-ship missile during a live fire test which took place on November 25 2015. The missile hit its target with high accuracy, showing the expertise of the French Navy to implement and maintain a complex weapons system for high-intensity conflict.

Those cranes do go along during deployments.

They have numerous uses while at sea.

If there is a malfunction or breakdown on the flight deck that require heavy lifting on the flight deck, that cannot be moved to the hanger at the time...the crane comes in very handy.

Or, if there is an accident and heavy wreckage needs to be moved.

The US Navy also has similar vehicles on its nuclear carriers.
