Russia, China agree on $2bn deal for 24 Su-35 warplanes

MOSCOW: Russia and China have agreed on the sale of 24 advanced Sukhoi Su-35 fighters to Beijing, the Russian state holding Rostec said on Thursday.

The deal – which military experts say could be worth more than $2 billion – represents the first time a foreign state has purchased the Su-35.

A representative of Rostec, speaking to AFP, confirmed a deal had been reached but declined to give details on the price and timeframe for delivery.

Moscow and Beijing have reportedly been in talks about the sale for three years, with Chinese media reporting in 2013 that the country had agreed to their purchase.

Vasily Kashin, an expert at the Centre for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, a leading military and security think tank in Moscow, estimated the deal to be worth more than $2 billion.

“It was the expected amount,” he told AFP.

Moscow and Beijing, which were rivals during the Cold War, have strengthened cooperation in recent years to counterbalance perceived dominance by the United States.

The sale will also help fill Russia’s state coffers as its economy has been reeling from low oil prices and Western sanctions imposed over the Ukraine crisis.

Rostec head Sergei Chemezov told Russian media earlier this month that Moscow was in talks with the United Arab Emirates for the sale of Su-35s.

On its website, Sukhoi describes the Su-35 as an upgraded “fourth-generation” multirole fighter, which first flew as an experimental model in 2007, capable of delivering eight tonnes of ordnance.

I recall reading a series of articles, in a Czech military journal, about how the Fort AA system was being developed, tested, etc. Speaking of memory now: the cruiser Azov was adapted and used; at some point (after several years) they were confident they could take out three airplanes out of the formation of four, which first had to be detected, targeted etc.; then the system was put into service, mid 1980s? I think my wife already threw out these copies of the journal anyway :)

An advanced S-400 Triumf air defense system on Thursday was delivered and deployed on combat duty at the Hmeymim airbase near the Syrian port city of Latakia, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported that Russia has delivered its S-400 missile defense system to its air base near Syria's Latakia.


"Today, in accordance with a decision by the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces, an S-400 air defense system was promptly delivered and deployed on combat duty at the Hmeymim air base in Syria," ministry's spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved the Defense Ministry’s request to deploy the S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) at the airbase in order to protect Russia’s Aerospace Forces operating in Syria.


The decision was made after Turkish fighter jets had shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber, which had been taking part in Russia's anti-terror campaign in Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the incident as a "stab in the back, carried out against us by accomplices of terrorists."

"Ramenskoye Avionics Design Bureau, incorporated by Radio-Electronic Technologies Concern, has supplied the customer with the first pilot examples of onboard avionics for the Mi-28NM helicopter enabling it to interact with unmanned aerial vehicles, Daniil Brenerman, the Bureau Director General, told the Russian news agency TASS. "The Ramenskoye Bureau is creating avionics for the Mi-28NM helicopter. The first pilot examples have been delivered to the customer in 2015," Brenerman said.

According to him, the Mi-28NM avionics differs from the existing system in being lighter and smaller and having an "all-glass cockpit." In addition, it uses high-speed optic communication lines between the system subunits and has an expanded capability for using new weapon types. Also, the avionics of the upgraded Nochnoi Okhotnik -"Night Hunter"- interacts with the helicopter armaments and unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, it has a helmet-mounted target designation and indication system.

Creation of the Mi-28NM began in 2009. The upgraded version essentially differs from its prototype. The component package of the Mi-28NM onboard radar equipment will include an innovative helmet-mounted target designation and indication system. The helicopter is fitted with new N025 radar enabling all-round surveillance. The flying vehicle is fitted with a new EW suite comprising an anti-missile laser. The helicopter is designed for search and destruction, by day and night in simple and adverse weather conditions, of low-speed air targets, tanks, armored and unarmored hardware and enemy manpower."

Sailors sayinvariably subs “sink” the surface force.

Yes, this has been true since the early 60's. Thats why Nuclear Attack Subs operate as long range ASW screen for Carrier Forces. This has helped a lot in preventing enemy subs from approaching. But, only to a limited degree. Ocean water is much more than it seems. temperature differences abound with depth and currents. Sound in water is reflected or deflected by temp erature gradiants.

Long and short in, a Sub measures these temperature differences constantly, and can hide with ease in and under layers. Fresher and saltier water also creates reflection or defelction layers. again, the Sub records these constantly. Leaving plenty of hiding places.

This all makes a Sub able to evade other subs and approach the surface task forces. Exercises repeatedly prove this. And when US Subs exercise, they attempt to mimic what we know about Chinese or Russian capabilites. Their sub does not assume American capabilites and use them to the full, they try to mimic the supposed enemy.
But is it true that with Russian submarines this often can't be done, due to the large operational technical differences ??

It is an axiom in the Submarine fleet and in the Anti Submarine Warfare schools that Subs sink Carriers. Thats just how it is .

Russia to Receive Reconnaissance Ship to Monitor US Missile Defense in 2016

The Ivan Khurs communications ship is planned to be launched in the second quarter of 2016, according to a spokesperson of Severnaya Verf shipyard.
The Russian Navy will receive the Ivan Khurs reconnaissance ship, able to monitor US missile defense systems, in December 2016, a spokesperson of Severnaya Verf shipyard said Friday.

"The Ivan Khurs communications ship is planned to be launched in the second quarter of 2016… Shipbuilders intend to pass the communications ship to the Russian Navy in December 2016," the spokesperson told RIA Novosti.The spokesperson added that the Ivan Khurs would significantly outmatch its predecessors.

On July 1, the head of the Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation order department, Anatoly Shlemov, told RIA Novosti that the Ivan Khurs will monitor US missile defense systems, among other tasks.

Russia-developed Project 18280 ships are designed to provide communications, support radio-electronic warfare, and carry out intelligence-gathering activities.
