Question.. How did the Turks get the jump on the Russian Su-24? Any ideas? Thanks.

They most likely came up to within visual range to set up a sidewinder shot.

No radar lock to give away the ambush, and minimal missile flight time to give the Su24 and pilots no chance to react.

Its the air combat equitant of sneaking up behind someone and shooting them point blank in the back.

The Su24's antiquated self defence suit would have given the pilots zero chance in that situation.

However, I doubt that even a plane with the latest MAWS and automated self defence suits installed could have avoided being shot down in that situation.

It was a well executed ambush.

Photo report from the military exhibition for the Minister of Defense of Russia. After the final of Tank biathlon on August 15th 2015 the Ministers were invited to visit a very interesting exhibition in Park Patriot made especially for them. Notice the subtle differences in the copulas.

We are really getting to see the Russian Air Force in action over Syria like it has rarely been seen.

For the Russians, they are supporting one of their principal allies, and they are showing the world that they have their precision weaponry and capabilities too.

For the US and the west, it is an opportunity to get very, very good intelligence on these aircraft in a way that they seldom have the opportunity to do. I mean, US AEW and AWACS aircraft are up in the air in the relative near vicinity, as well as other coalition aircraft.

Here are pics of the SU-24, SU-25, SU-34, Tu-22M and Tu-160s (with SU-30s escorting) in action:
