Exactly...And IF Liaoning was ever truly deployed to the MED that would be headline news.
Exactly. It would be heralded on ALL of the major news sources, and US surveillance would see it long in advance.

I'm guessing that right now she is in her homeport.
Yes. me too...or somewhere nearby at the moment.

Will Liaoning ever make a deployment to the MED? One of the big problems for such a deployment would be logistics. Although China has sent other ships to the MED and to the Baltic & UK.
Well, we have seen them conducting UNREP (now called RAS) on many occasions...but I do not recall seeing them do it with the carrier yet.

I do recall seeing the carrier and her large task group together in the SCS a time or two now. But I do not recall seeing a RAS with the carrier from one of their AOR vessels.

That certainly does not mean they have not done it...simply that we have not seen pictures of it.

As you said...time will tell.

I just thought of something concerning CV-16 as far as logistics is concerned. Are there any plans for a dedicated COD? Carrier Onboard Delivery aircraft? A COD is essential for rapids delivery of necessities. ..aircraft parts, special mail, important gear etc..etc..

Any takers on that query?

They are going to have to have a STOL aircraft of some type, that is then designed for carrier landings and take-off.

Having one that can take off of the Ski-Jump is going to be particularly difficult for them in terms of being able to accommodate it within any operational tempo.

They may well find one that can take off with a long running start from amid-ships, and into a very stiff wind. but having to do that and disrupt other operations is not a way to operate your carrier.

Then there is the whole issue of trapping such an aircraft with a tail hook and arrestor cable.

I do not know of any existing aircraft they have prepared to do both. They may be working on one...but if they are I have heard nothing of it.

BTW, the exact same issues apply to them having any fixed wing AEW aircraft for the Liaoning or her STOBAR sister.

They are using AEW helicopters currently for AEW. They are not nearly as effective as a fixed wing, E-2C type aircraft...but they are far better than nothing.

They will probably compromise with helicopters in the foreseeable future. Not an optimal solution, but on a ski jump carrier a true COD aircraft probably isn't realistic.

Eventually I expect a true COD aircraft like a Y-7 derived aircraft possibly, for carriers with catapults.

COD and AEW aircraft for use on carriers are not easily derived from Y-7. The forces on the aircraft at take off, at touch down ( 6 m/s v. 3 m/s vertical velocity ) and arresting are too different. It makes much more sense to design a new aircraft.
Besides there is no urgent need because operation use far from China is probably some ten years away.
We have seen a Y-7 derived aircraft rebuilt to win experience with a radome for such AEW aircraft so we know work is being done.
