ISIS/ISIL conflict in Syria/Iraq (No OpEd, No Politics)

I think in the coming hours and days, Russian media will put more emphasis and coverage on the terrorists on the ground who machine gunned the Russian air crew. So it will look like vengeance/justice was served when Russian jets and/or ground forces hunt down and exterminate them.

If Turkey is stupid enough to send warplanes anywhere near those areas, the Russians will go out of their way to bag a few kills, and NATO will probably stay quiet even if that was over Turkish airspace.

But Putin is, above all else, a pragmatic man, so he will be looking to turn this to his advantage as much as he is out to get satisfaction.

Which is why I think he is going to pivot this into concrete gains on the ground. He is going to make sure the Turkish boarder with Syria is totally shut down, and will probably send in Russian ground troops and enlist the help of his own "moderate rebels" aka PKK to not only do that, but also get some long term payback against the Turks.

Back home, Putin can point to Turkey grounding their planes to show that he stared NATO down and NATO blinked first, which will boost his image and popularity and give him the time and space he needs to make his moves on the ground.

Looks like ISIS just lost their ace in the hole. If things does as I expect, this will be the final nail in the coffin for them.

On Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 19:30 (French time), the French fighters were engaged over Iraq since the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. With aircraft of the US Air Force, the four Rafale hit IS capacity command and training.

The joint raid destroyed the targets referred to in Tall Afar. Catapulted from the eastern Mediterranean in the late afternoon, the four fighters destroyed an active command and training center occupied by the terrorist fighters Tall Afar. Conduit conjunction with aircraft of the US Air Force, the raid lasted nearly five hours. A total of 20 bombs were delivered.

The new mission of the battle group could be conducted through intelligence previously made flights over Iraq by the coalition and the aircraft of the air force deployed in Jordan and the Persian Gulf.

These air missions aim to weaken the military IS capabilities and participate in the recovery of the territories controlled by terrorists

Russia will deploy S-400 defense missile systems to Hmeymim airbase in Syria, Russian Defense Minister Gen. Sergei Shoygu said Thursday.

Russia is deploying S-400 Triumf (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) next generation surface-to-air missile systems to the Hmeymim airbase in Syria where the Russian Aerospace Forces group is stationed, according to Russian Defense Minister Gen. Sergei Shoigu.

Moscow will deploy a warship off the Syrian coast near Latakia to strengthen the defense of its air base there, the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces announced on Tuesday after Turkish warplanes shot down a Russian strike aircraft.

Russian fighter jets will now accompany all of Moscow's missions against Islamic State targets in Syria, the General Staff said. Prior to Tuesday's attack, Russian bombers were conducting their missions without air cover.

Turkish warplanes shot down a Russian Su-24M bomber aircraft that Turkey said had violated its airspace. Both pilots ejected, and one was

while parachuting to the ground, the Russian Defense Ministry later confirmed.

Moscow has insisted its aircraft was not in Turkish airspace and posed no threat. The Russian Defense Ministry has suspended military contact with Turkey over the plane downing, which President Vladimir Putin called "a stab in the back."

Later Tuesday, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter conducting a search-and-rescue mission for the other pilot was

by a rebel missile in Syria. One naval infantry soldier reportedly was killed in that attack.

The surviving crew reportedly was evacuated to the Russian base at Hmeymim, Syria.

Lieutenant General Sergei Rudskoi, a spokesman for the General Staff, released a statement, saying in part:

"The General Staff is currently working out additional measures to ensure the security of the Russian air base. First: all actions of strike aircraft will be carried out only under cover of fighter planes. Second: measures will be taken to strengthen defense. To this end, the cruiser Moskva, equipped with Fort air defense system, similar to S-300, will assume position in the coastal region of Latakia. We caution that any targets, representing a potential danger for us, will be destroyed. Third: Contacts with Turkey on military lines will be discontinued."

Russia took the neglected Hmeymim Air Base in Latakia – just 30 miles from the Turkish border – and transformed it into the strategic center of Moscow's military operation against the Islamic State. The base houses hundreds of military personnel and has bays for more than 50 aircraft.

I think the part I highlighted is the most significant news. The Russians have effectively declared a no fly zone in Southern Turkey.

Obviously they do not explicitly say so, but you can bet that any Turkish warplanes that comes within missile range of the boarder will be automatically considered as a threat to Russian aircraft operating in the area, targeted, engaged and destroyed.

The navigator managed to hide, was found by SF of the Syrian Army, returned to the base (in Latakia, I presume) at 0340 hours of today, Moscow time (it would be 0240 of local time, I now checked). He's safe and sound. He's name is Konstantin Murakchtin (I don't know his Rank).
