Does that say Iron Eagle? Will they let Lois Gosset Jr. Fly it?

on a more serious tone kind of a let down, I was hoping for something more ambitious.

Speaking of Ambition and out of left field here but, Assuming this is the J(H)18 and it's derived from the J16 which is more or less a updated J11. Then Is it possible for the PLANAF to do the same to the J15? I mean J15 is also based off the J11 family and the Flanker line. Sure it would loose some of the payload but if you could get a Navalized Fullback you could task it for a wider range of more specialized missions ASW, Air Tanker, strike bomber, maybe some degree of AEW.

I thought PLANAF had the J-15S for strike purposes. Anything Su-34-sized would take up a significant amount of deck/hangar space.

length of the SU34 is 23.34 meters length of the SU33 is 21.19 wing span of the SU34 is 14.7 meters the same as the SU33 unfolded height of the SU34 is 6.09 meters height of the SU33 is 5.93. So a maybe a little over 2 meters longer, and just a little taller.
the space savings for the SU33 is the modifications. The Stinger tail is shortened, Wings and horizontal stabilizers fold. J15 is believed to have identical dimensions to the SU33 an the three SU33,J15 and SU34 are all members of the Flanker family.

Well the Rumor is making the rounds.

Incidentally Tylor also covers the History of the SU34 and Tandom cockpit Flankers including the Su-33KUB which I was unaware of when I made my posts earlier but fits the bill as a Tandem flanker for a carrier deck.

hey guy i found this news about a chinese su-34 derivative, based on pics from weibo and some rumors about a new chinese type flying...

This image, posted on the Chinese website Weibo, shows what appears to be a Chinese Su-27 Flanker derivative very similar to

The picture coincides with rumors that a new Chinese fighter type flew recently but we have no way to authenticate the image at this time.

There is no prior indication that Russia has licensed Russian aircraft designer Sukhoi’s Su-34 fighter-bomber to China, but this has not stopped China from building its own Sukhoi clones before. Currently China has multiple indigenous Su-27 Flanker derivatives in production,

, from which the J-15 was directly modeled. China also flies Russian-built and officially licensed versions of the Su-27 as well.....

If this photo is indeed legitimate, this aircraft does look like a close copy of the Su-34. Key features are present including its platypus nose which is optimized for side-by-side seating and broad radar aperture. A “stinger” style tail boom is also present, just as it is on the Su-34, along with canard fore-planes. Although, in this case, it looks like these fore-planes may be mated to the aircraft’s wing via a large leading-edge root extension plate. This is something that does not exist on Russia’s Su-34s. This could be a feature installed just for initial test flights, or it could be a unique Chinese feature.

The idea that China may be developing a Su-34 knock-off is intriguing and it does fit their anti-access, area denial strategy, one in which short-ranged fighters have less utility than long-ranged ones. Its side-by-side crew layout is ideal for longer missions and its large radar aperture is useful for installing a powerful electronically scanned radar array with long-range air-to-air search and track capabilities and high resolution air-to-ground modes for attacking surface targets in littoral environments.

This would give China a particularly well suited weapon for anti-ship missions and for long-range anti-aircraft operations. In particular, attacks on airborne warning and control, tanker and other support aircraft may be possible by lobbing long-range anti-radiation and anti-aircraft missiles at these targets. The same can be said for the anti-ship role, with the type known to be able to

Like TerraN said, if this J-18 or whatever its called turns out to be true, I'll be a bit disappointed as I was hoping that the H-18 would appear instead as it is far more ambitious and IMO useful in the long term. However do we know if the new aircraft might be the H-18? Because the only rumor we have gotten so far was that a new type of aircraft has flown recently, and because it doesn't specify what kind of aircraft, I was hoping it would be the H-18 :(.

As per Huitong's claims, the J-18 and H-18 are separate projects.
