Does anyone know how many Il-76's and Il-78's China has in service ? I know there was an attempt to buy 30 new Il-76's several years back that in the end fell apart. But more recently China bought some second hand planes from the Russians. And there were like 17 in service before that including the 3 KJ-2000 AWACS.

it's interesting that so many seem to have retired from the first batch. It seems like they have imported close to 20 second hand IL-76/78s.
And yes, 3 IL-78s
Where's the third one, since this list shows only two ?
Out of that 31 on the list how many are retired ? (I can't read Chinese)

Retired? I bet some of it being lent to the North Korean Navy. I have no evidence just my suspicion that's all.
well, I just look at the date they got handed over to China and it seems like the number of earlier ones is limited, much fewer than the 14 that was supposedly in service before this new batch joined. I find the list kind of suspect, because all of the pre-2010 IL-76s are no longer in service with the 13th division. They are all in this flight schools. It's hard for me to believe every one of the earlier IL-76s have retired.
