I would imagine that the likes of the SA22 are there for close defence against incoming rocket and artillery attacks, although something like the Chinese LD2000 would probably be far better suited to that role.

If the Russians were on the ball, they should have also deployed tracking radar with their artillery that should give them near instance origination co-ordinates for any incoming ordinance for them to deploy near immediate counter-battery fire.

My guess would be that ISIS fired some rockets at the general vicinity of the airbase, but the rockets didn't really come close to hitting the base itself, and may well have taken some Russian counter-battery artillery fire for their troubles.

Insurgents and terrorists could launch mortar attacks on western bases because mortars are fairly light weapons easy to smuggle close to their intended target. Mortars are also fairly short ranged, so against a large airbase, its hard to miss the base entirely. But Insurgents generally lack the training, discipline and co-ordination to do any damage as they are just effectively taking blind pop shots hoping to get lucky rather than aiming for specific targets.

I seriously doubt ISIS could get grads to within visual range of the Russian base without being spotted and engaged first, so they would almost certainly been firing from long range.

The grads were hardly precise weapons to start with, so the further back they are firing from, the less likely they would even hit the airport.

Never said it was fact nor that it really did much in damage. As I did point out the vehicle is very light weight and that makes it highly mobile compared to a full grad launcher.

Can I say I find it humorous that member asking to have my post removed liked it?
Also just because its at the extreme range of the system doesn't mean that its beyond the potential of use.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are engaged in the war in Yemen and are less able, financially and militarily, to intervene in Syria. The position of Egypt in support of the Russian intervention removes it from a place in a Saudi threat to increase its support for the terrorists with the Egyptian army, the largest Arab army, in the background. We now have the Iranian and Egyptian armies available to intervene in support of Syria in the most dire circumstances. I hope that the threat will be sufficient to make that intervention unnecessary.

Nouriel Roubini write in a recent article,

, that oil production continues in the ISIS area of Iraq:
Even in the parts of Iraq now controlled by the Islamic State, oil production continues, with output smuggled and sold in foreign markets. And the prospect that sanctions on Iran’s oil exports will be phased out implies significant inflows of foreign direct investment aimed at increasing production and export capacity.
Apparently the US coalition does not act against this oil transport, probably to appease Turkey that makes a nice profit on this trade. But this is also an important financial support for ISIS. When Iraq says that it has lost trust in US activities against ISIS Iran and/or Russia will use its air force to cut that trade.

Quite a lot is happening in the Middle East and in the World. It is fascinating and frightening.

IT certainly helps with perspective.
It sounds as though the final absence of any "moderates" will be easier to blame on Russian bombing rather than keep admitting that it along with at least half a billion dollars worth of training and weapons defected to Al-Qidea and IS!

Their attempts to pin the blame on Russia for the absence of moderates are shambolic and I get the feeling that the public in the West in general, judging from the comments elsewhere, are favoring the Russian strikes and critical of their own governments.

video inside with readying the aircraft, and a summary of their most recent achievements (for example taking out a communication site, and destroying about 30 pieces of equipment (probably refers to vehicles) including (an unspecified number of) T-55 tanks captured from the Syrian Army -- this is what the link says)
