PLAN Current Vessel Inventory Thread

Captain
The excel sheets Jeff posted in the 054 and 056 threat inspired me to do the following.

xrIsDAa.jpg

It is the number of in commission PLAN surface warships over a period of 10 years. Outside the 054 / 056 the numbers are wiki derived. I hope those are still valid?
It's surface combatants only. I feel I actually need to include the 037 types here, as I believe those "correspond" to the 056, which, looked at on it's own, accounts for a sharp increase in overall vessel numbers, when in fact it rather replaces the 037s? At least the sub chasers I guess. Don't know how much the 022 took over 037 duties.
However, I would need someone to point me to a reliable source for in and out of service dates.

I would also very much like to include the submarine force. Same problem as above.

Any input on the diagram, or the vessel grouping in it?

Yes 056 replace right now 037 Hainan no Corvettes Houxin/Houjian 037 IG/II with SSM IG/II 22 and 6 in service.
022 are 60 in service often mentionned 83 but according US reports production stop in 2009 about to 60 and worck with the 5 Flotillas of 12 equiped.

For the rest i think you have datas here but if you have need let' s some questions.

Nice and thanks for sharing my friend :) only things long table if you can put numbers of units also to the right more easy for look.

OK I've tried to run the numbers again here and elsewhere on the web. I've also increased the timeframe to cover the last 15 years. First are again the surface combatants. However, I still find myself unable to get proper numbers for the 037s, yet by calling the table major surface combatants, I can perhaps leave them out while including the 056s. Anyhow, it's still only the spike at the end distorting the picture somewhat. Abouth 10 years ago is were the transformation seems to have begun:

The next table is the submarines. Here I interpolated the numbers somewhat. Should still be generally correct I hope. I know there were still some type 033 left in the early 2000s, mainly for training for all I know. I'm unable to trace down those numbers, so they don't show up. At least without them, the numer of SSKs goes up pretty steep:

Then I did the large amphibs, not much to tell there:

Finally is a table showing legacy vs modern subs and surface combatants. I hope grouping is not too arbitrary.
(035&091 vs "the rest" and all 053&051basic vs "the rest")

Great job scratch!

I have a suggestion, which would be to possibly convert the above graphs into "tonnage" for each type of ship, to see the change in overall tonnage for each class of vessel, which would illustrate better the change in capability compared to only the numbers of types of ship (as a 28,000 ton 071 is obviously far more capable than a 6000 ton 072, and should be afforded more weight on a graph).

The simple way to do it would be to estimate the full displacements of each type of vessel, then simply multiply the no. of each type of vessel commissioned in each year by its estimated full displacement, and change the y axis to "cumulative displacement, in thousands of tons". I would be very interested to see how the graphs would change if the input were modified as such.

If you had the data in something like excel, you can do this quite easily by simply making another column of the different ship class tonnage, and multiply your numbers of each class by that, then plot that instead, make change to the axis units.

I think it would be interesting, for surface combatants, at least.

For submarines the more difficult, Ming/035 numbers before 2 Flotillas of 8 equiped : 16 but the last 5 Yuan* replace these ones to Lushun then now normaly remains 11 Ming.

*minimum number sure 13 maybe 14 now, one build by year.

Blitzo, no_name, thanks guys. I indeed do have an excel sheet (well Open Office Calc :) ) of the above, just give me a day or two.
I'm really not that up to speed in naval matters, so it won't be me estimating displacements for the vessels. I'll go through the threats on this forum and skim wiki again. Otherwise I might just get back to you and ask ...

The last I heard about the 035 was that two "G" were likely decommissioned in early 2015 to be sold to Bangladesh. I might drop a few more over the last years to arrive at 11 in 2016.
I also so far did not adjust numbers for the second half of this year, as I'm again not really up to speed. That is why numbers, especially for 039A, 054A and 056A stagnate at the end.

Wikipedia is actually not too bad a source for estimates of the full displacements of chinese naval ships... sometimes there are edit wars (for instance, 071's displacement right now is listed as 20,000 tons rather than the more official number of 25,000 tons) but many of them aren't off by too much, and even then one can make an educated guestimate by cross referencing others.
I'll put a brief rundown for the surface combatants -- even if they're off by a few percent it ain't too big a deal:

056/A: 1500 tons
052D: 7500 tons
052C: 7000 tons
052B: 6500 tons
051C: 7100 tons
Sovs: 8000 tons
052: 5000 tons
051B: 6000 tons
051: 3700 tons
054/A: 4050 tons
053H3: 2400 tons
053H1/2: 2000 tons

Ok here it is. Essentially the same charts as above, however with the combined full load tonnage on the y-axis.

Surface combatants first. The "size" of the fleet has more than doubled in 15 years. It's the many FFGs and large DDGs.
wiOKMhH.jpg

Next is the submarines again. The rather large Kilos added considerably to the fleet size about 10 years ago. And then the 039A. For the 035 I adjusted the last few years to arrive at 11 in the end. Which explains that part decreasing a bit faster.
cNkXMS2.jpg

Then we have the amphibs. The 4 071s increased amphib tonnage by almost 2/3 over the last 8 years. And with their large flight deck and organic helos added limited sea-borne airlift to the mix. That bonus doesnt even show up here.
KHjmAkf.jpg

I guess for the surface combatants I could also make a chart on point / area air defence and ASh/LACMs in the fleet. Plus available common VLS cells. Maybe, if I find some time.
Before the "tonnage request" came up I had prepared other numbers already, which may show up here shortly ... :)
