The Neuron successfully complete the flight test campaign in Italy

3KiHR9b.jpg

(Defensa.com) The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Combat (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle, UCAV) Neuron has taken a significant step with the completion of the phase of flight testing, a breakthrough for this important multinational European defense system. The Neuron is basically a full-scale demonstrator system with which reliably subsequently develop an operational European UCAV, a project jointly involved major aeronautical industries of the Continent, led by France's Dassault Aviation and with the collaboration of the Italian Finmeccanica-Alenia Aermacchi, the Swedish Saab, the multinational Airbus Defence and Space (ADS), the RUAG Swiss and Greek HAI.

To conduct test flights, the aircraft was deployed at the base of the Italian Aaérea Force Decimomannu, in Sardinia, which has in its vicinity with a bounded air traffic areas for flight testing and training .During the campaign training flights the Neuron has fulfilled a number of test runs twelve flights very sensitive in that there has been combat capability of the apparatus, being able to check its low radar signature (technically radar cross-section) and infrared. The tests were done flying at different altitudes and with different flight profiles, and the threat of locating both ground radar stations and interceptor high-performance devices, such as a Eurofighter who participated in the trial test of the "ghosts" capabilities that incorporates technologies Neuron. During deployment of the system in Sardinia it has confirmed its superb performance and operational reliability to these threats.

Last summer, for the next phase of testing, the unit will move to Sweden, more exactly Vidsel Air Base, where, in Annex Proving Ground Defence Ministry of Sweden, held a new series of flight tests . Thus, in a scenario so radically different, you can check flight capacity in low visibility conditions, and additionally its performance when carrying the hold open arms, when it is easier to detect these technology devices "ghost".

These phases of Neuron tests are a key step in the maturation of the technology system, especially helping to reduce risk levels and very important future investment must provide European countries in the field of technologies for UAS "ghosts ", as a prelude to later acquire fully operational systems UCAS.

F-22 Raptors Will Be Deploying To Europe To Send A Strong Message To Russia

After teasing the possibility of Raptors deploying to Europe months ago, Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James has confirmed to reporters that Raptor is indeed going to be sent to Europe as part of an ongoing initiative to reassure NATO allies of America’s commitment to their defense.

Secretary James made it clear that the move to send the F-22 to Russia’s front doorstep is part of Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s “strong and balanced” approach to reminding Russia of the consequences of extra-border ambitions:

“Rotational forces and training exercises help us maintain our strong and balanced approach, and we will certainly be continuing those in the future… For the Air Force, an F-22 deployment is certainly on the strong side of the coin.”

Exactly what F-22 unit will be sent to Europe and where they would be based remains unclear, although General. Mark Welsh, the U.S. Air Force’s Chief of Staff noted:

“We’ll get the F-22 into facilities that we would potentially use in a conflict in Europe… This is a natural evolution of our bringing our best air-to-air capability in to train with partners… We have an aircraft with pretty advanced capabilities, and we need, and they would like, for us to be able to interoperate in multiple type scenarios… And being able to train side by side with them and do that kind of training is really, really important for us. And that’s what this is for.”

The Raptor’s inaugural long-term deployment to Europe (it has had a near constant presence in the Middle East) will most likely follow along the lines of what the Florida and Oregon Air National Guard have executed in their F-15C/Ds since Spring. As part of the ongoing Operation Atlantic Resolve, the Eagles hopped East from one key NATO base to another, training with local units along the way, before ending up at a temporary Eastern European air defense post.

Sending a detachment of Raptors to Europe also points to the possibility that things are not necessarily improving when it comes to Russian-NATO relations. If anything else, they are getting worse as forward deploying the world’s only truly operational 5th generation fighter to Eastern Europe is a card best held until needed.

Then again, the size of America’s air superiority fighter fleet has shrunk so much over the last 25 years that the Eagle community, made up of about 192 aircraft in total (about 25 percent of which are being used for training and development), may not be able to sustain these types of deployments alone while also meeting their homeland defense, regional deterrent and their many training goals. Additionally, both aircraft, the super complex F-22 and the aging F-15C, require large amounts of maintenance to keep them airworthy at any given time. As such, calling the F-22 to deploy to Europe may be an acknowledgement of an inevitable logistical reality as much as a strategic play.

This is just posturing is all. The truth is it doesn't matter if the fox 3 comes from a raptor, an eagle or shot out the assend of a cargo. I am pretty sure any intentional downing of Russian fighters by NATO or vice versa would quickly escalate down a path of unintended and dangerous consequences.

I am however a big fan or overseas deployment especially for fast movers because it gives the pilot familiarity with the terrain and local environments in case they have to do it for real one day.

A smart politician would say they deploy to deter but in reality it's more intense training for the driver and the crew. Also intra-operability and acquiring local knowledge of local allies. A dumb politician would actually believe he's trying to deter something.

Bell and TAI are getting ready to supply attack helicopters to Poland once they finally establish their formal tender.
TAI has already singed MoUs with polish companies, should the T129 be selected. They seem to be willing to even offer local production.

Spanish Navy’s Frigate to Conduct BMD Drills
Spanish Navy’s frigate Almirante Juan de Borbón (F-102) has just set sail from Ferrol, Spain to take part in a ballistic missile defense (BMD) exercise along with a US Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer off the western coast of Scotland.

The F-102 is the second Alvaro de Bazán-class frigate equipped with the US AEGIS combat system.

The purpose of the deployment is to check the new capability to detect and track ballistic missiles.

Subsequently the Spanish warship will participate in the At Sea Demonstration 2015 (ASD-15) exercise with other naval units from Canada, USA, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom.

During the ASD-15 the Almirante Juan de Borbón will contribute to the multinational ballistic missile defense system and will also launch a missile against a conventional air target.

Elbit Systems supplies a system based intelligence UAV to a European customer for $ 78 million

smPZRP4.jpg

(Defensa.com) Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract of $ 78 million to provide an intelligence system based on long-range unmanned aerial vehicle for a European client. As usual among Israeli manufacturers, the country is not identified and only system electro-reaching intelligence AMPS (Advanced Multi-Sensor Payload System) is cited. Neither the aerial platform or the number of aircraft mentioned and cited only the contract will take place over the next two years. It is the responsibility of the new business unit ISTAR Elbit Systems Division, resulting from the merger of the division of UAVs and the subsidiary Elop dedicated to electro-optical systems.

It is a system for acquiring long-range intelligence employing several electro-optical sensors for night visual information, day or in difficult weather conditions. The AMPS is a system of detection, recognition and designation of long-range goals TV equipped with sensors of high performance third generation FLIR and CCD sensor type, equipment installed on a swiveling turret is installed under the fuselage. The system allows accurate geolocation targets detected by the sensors.

Elbit Systems markets the AMPS for installation in both manned and unmanned platforms, being the Hermes 900 unmanned platform that offers usually given its great capacity for loading systems (350 kilos) compared to the weight of AMPS (85 kilos). Right now the only European customer Hermes 900 is Switzerland, which selected in June last year this UAV MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) to replace the Ranger IAI Precisely it was then announced that the date of entry into service of Hermes 900 in the Ministry of Defence and Civil Protection of the country is 2,017, which would coincide within two years of delivery mentioned by the company.

The Hermes 900 UAS evaluated for the Swiss program 15 were equipped with different electro-optical systems, namely turret COMPASS electro and electro-optical system LASSO long-range surveillance, and a synthetic aperture radar. The Large Area Scanning Operation (LASSO) Hermes 900 allows the automated operation of the multispectral information obtained and the mapping of large surfaces. It is therefore likely that this contract relates to the supply of electro-intelligence systems reaching for the Swiss program, replacing the LASSO system that was introduced Hermes 900 chosen by this country.
