Re: Interesting Videos

Heres a couple of videos relating to Iraq. The first one is a propaganda video used by the former regime to show Iraq's military might - that would be easily defeated a few years later.

This one shows the SAMs and AAA displayed in the first video in combat action in the Iraq war while Baghdad is being bombed. I mostly watch this video to observe the kind of air defences Iraq was using - if you look carefully, you'll see a few SAMs being launched.

By the way, does anyone have any vids of the Bombing of Belgrade?

That second one is really cool. I watched that live at my house as it was going on. It seems to me that the Iraqi air defence consisted of random AAA firing and shooting a couple SAMs at random too. What were those whit dots moving slowly across the screen up in the air? I thought they might be SAMs, but they were going too slow and sort of just fell back to earth, so maybe they are AAA or somesort of flare or something.

Yeah, I thought they were SAMs to, but now that you bring up that point, they might have been flares, either dropped by the U.S. bombers or used by the Iraqis to try to light up the sky. The ack-ack certainly looks concentrated, but they clearly didn't know what they were firing at or where the attackers were. It does look like a pretty co-ordinated and well-warned system. Not what it was in the Gulf War 1 though. That was way more concentrated. Does anyone have any vids of Baghdad air raids in that war?
The SAM that they launched in the second vid looked like it was easily deflected. You see what I mean, since it rises, than levels off at low altitude and the warhead detonates. Must have been quite and old missile, easily susceptible to ECM.

Re: Interesting Videos

I didn't think that they were SAMs because they had so many of them. Knowing that the US didn't suffer any casualties bombing Baghdad, I thought that it was rediculous to believe that all of those things were SAMs. With that many fired, the US was bound to have taken quite a few losses. So I think they were errant tracers, flares from te ground and planes, etc. They might even have been flying debris from the US bombing. That one SAM that is at the end of the video lost its target pretty quick; you can tell from its arc and then explosion.

To me, the firing doesn't seem very concentrated at all. It looks very random, going in different directions and at differing altitudes.

Re: Interesting Videos

Often the tracers and SAMs are very misleading. They look good on TV, but remember the Iraqis with something so outdated that they can't reach the U.S. bombers, which are probably flying at well over 10,000 feet. The Iraqi anti-aircraft weapons tended to be ineffective above 5,000 feet. The SAM that I metioned (it definetly was a SAM becauses you see it detonate in mid-air) was probably a low-altitude missile, probably a Roland or an SA-9, most likely an SA-3. These are old missiles which can be advoided easily. You see a few of them in the first video.
The ack-ack is concentrated at the start of the video, but as the explosions get more violent it seems to subside. I remember watching the raids, and the flak wasn't as numerous after that raid. That was the best the Iraqi air defences were capable of doing. But you're right that it is random, but if you look at the begginging they're trying to shoot it in a screen to catch any aircraft flying at low-level. They did that alot when they were fighting of our tornadoes from their airfields in the first Gulf War.
Two aircraft were shot down over Baghdad later in the war. One of them was an A-10. They also managed to bag a few UAVs as well. They also claim to have shot down some cruise missiles.

Re: Interesting Videos

I have some good videos from the falklands war. This one shows an argie air attack on what looks to me like the Sir Galahad.

This one is a documentary about the attack on the HMS Coventry. Why they decided to put this particulary song in it I don't know.

This one gives a general summary of the Falklands war. Highlights include the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano and HMS Sheffield. Again strange choice of music.

This one is Argentine propaganda as far as I'm concerned. A lot of Britain bashing in this. They even had the nerve to put a rip off of music from Gladiator in it.

To show you the British side, heres another vid about the paras. It also has music from Gladiator.

This one is the beat vid. No bias. Just a memorial to both sides. It has the memorial tune "Gortaz a Ran" from Black Hawk Down, which I think is ideal.

The reason the Iraqi air defence did not hit anything is that the US military ECM shut down thos Iraqi systems. They were shooting blind.

Even if the ECM didn't shut downs those Iraqi systems, they still wouldn't be able to hit any US planes because they are that outdated and obsolete.
