Is there any source to back it up ? or purely your opinions?
It's hard to believe that the US would need doing that (AESA and carbon composite)

I believe you can read it at wiki or dig something up with a google search.
It was also at the height of US export deficit in which Japanese cars were forcing the Big 3 into the corner while Japan stood on with minimum access to import of rice and beef.
Mr. Morita of Sony wrote a book titled "Japan as No.1" didn't really do much good either. LoL
In any case the vast R&D was the main reason for the F-2 being such an expensive plane even though it's based on an already mass produced airframe.

Japan as No. 1 was wrote by a Harvard professor. The book you are thinking of is this.

Co-authored by Mr. Morita of Sony and far right politician Shintaro Ishihara (who later engineered the nationalization of Diaoyu Island/Senkaku).

This has more to do with trade negotiation and industrial espionage, which places the US in a much more ackward position, then national security and military alliance.
It does jeprodize the Echelon listening station in Misawa though.

If the US espionage on Japan was more to do with trade negotiation and industrial espionage, then it should not be above the ECHOLON, which was created to deal with a much bigger threat. Japan will react the same way as France, Germany and Italy and everything thing will be back to normal.

Basically all information gather is through ECHOLON and one of the gathering station is in Japan in which Japan is paying land lease and providing electricity through various treaties while Japan is completely out of the loop.
Now that we find that the money invested is used to spy against Japan is not going to sit well in Lower and Upper house in which the minority parties are going to have a hanging party over this.
Get the idea?
