Monster Hunt has made about $208 million USD in 10 days. If it makes about another $45 million in the next four days I believe it'll beat Fast and the Furious 7's performance in China in the same amount of time. I love reading comments to the articles about this performance. It's really getting people angry that a Chinese movie in any sense beats them even when it's in the Chinese box office alone.

That's why you don't see Chinese box office films will ever be opening in the US anytime soon. God willing if the American public would rather watch "Monster Hunt" instead it spells the end of Hollywood monopoly on low budget films (low meaning under the cost of $100).

I think it's safe for Hollywood that Chinese movies as they are now will not perform well in the US. There's a general prejudice against non-English speaking foreign movies. That's why when there is a good one that gets attention. They won't show it in the US but instead they remake it for Americans audiences. China has the big box office numbers that get people's attention. But they also need the part where their movies have global appeal and not just meant as a commercial for Chinese culture which those in government seem to think that's what movies are all about.

Maybe in more rural areas, but there is large growing fan base that still enjoys watching Hong Kong and Chinese Kung Fu movies (yes even the newer ones). The Korean movies and Japanese anime are a few examples that are popular as well. Fans want to see something different instead of the usual CGI fill Hollywood repeats of the same genre over and over. Why do you think t.v series like Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, etc. are so popular and doing well? That's because it's creative and offer a more unique story line and scenario. There will always be the Michael Bay type films of explosions and cleavages of bossom women year round for the fun of it. But I think fans really wants to see some really good plot and imagination as well.

BEIJING, China - China is lifting its ban on sales of video game consoles to promote the industry and a new manufacturing zone in Shanghai.

Consoles produced in the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone will automatically be approved for sale in the rest of China, according to a Ministry of Culture notice dated Friday.

The announcement eases a sales ban imposed in 2000 due to concern Chinese children would waste time playing video games.

Communist leaders are promoting entertainment and technology development as part of a marathon effort to shift the world's second-largest economy to more sustainable growth supported by domestic consumption and cleaner industries.

The Shanghai trade zone was created in 2013 and gives foreign companies wider access to a range of industries, allowing bigger ownership stakes and activities that are prohibited elsewhere in China.

Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. both have announced plans to manufacture game consoles in the Shanghai zone with Chinese partners.

The latest rules are intended to promote technology development and a "healthy and progressive" entertainment environment, the ministry notice said.

Content of games will be subject to government censorship, it said.

I'm not quite sure what this is saying. Are they merely lifting bans for the sake of manufacturing opportunities (I thought video game consoles already were made in China though?) or are they saying that they want to encourage indigenous development of Chinese video games and consoles?

The counter argument to yours is Hollywood makers and shakers are on balance whores and mercenaries, and they'd roll out the welcome mat for Chinese films if they could get a "fair" share of the profits.

True but Mace's observation holds true as well. Chinese movies is just not going to reach it's true potential with the North American audience I think that's pretty much a fact.

Hollywood is all about $$$$$. They know this as well. If they think for a single second that by replacing Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, RD Jr., Chris Pratt etc with an Asian actor would generate more revenue they would do it in a hearbeat!

I think it's a safe assumption that had Avengers or Avatar etc been made in China with all Asian cast it wouldn't have done anywhere close like it did in the NA box office. Not to say it wouldn't have been be profitable but no where close to the actual movies.

the same goes with other forms of entertainment be it singers, sports stars etc. There are probably ten thousand chinese singers more talented than say Kate Perry, Taylor Swift etc but I guarantee you more people will go see their concerts than these chinese singers and this could be in Asia itself.

It's all about marketing and perception to draw the crowds.

Is that mean the Chinese people are more open minded than westerners? :D At least with entertainment like foreign country movies and songs. It seems like is much easier and more acceptance for the general Chinese public with other countries song and movies no matter is from America or Korea. You hardly see any foreign movies or songs doing well in America.
