Looks like CJ-7 still using piston engine. Is there any advantage of piston engine over turboprop?
The piston engine is about 300 hp. Turbine engines of that power are not very efficient, but are expensive to buy and maintain. So the piston engine save a lot of money in a primary trainer. For advanced trainers and COIN aircraft one would prefer a turbine engine of four to eight times that power or even more.

It always puzzles me why PLAAF chose JL-9 and not more advanced JL-15 ? I don't think $$$ is the main issue?
