They are a part of the US Expeditionary Strike Group patrolling in the area, where embarked sailors and Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are visiting to prepare for the upcoming biennial military training exercise Talisman Sabre 2015.

The US and its allies are constantly training like this with multiple in depth exercises each year.

HMAS Tobruk , the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's ) only heavy landing ship, completed its final voyage to the Garden Island naval base in Sydney on 25 June prior to decommissioning on 31 July.

The 5,800-tonne vessel, based on the design of the Round Table class of the UK's Royal Fleet Auxiliary, was constructed in Newcastle, Australia, and commissioned in April 1981.

COMMENT
During its 34 years in service Tobruk was a mainstay of the RAN's heavy sealift capability, but in recent years became increasingly unreliable.
Notwithstanding Tobruk 's retirement, the RAN's sealift capability is approaching an all-time high with the commissioning in November 2014 of the 27,500 tonne helicopter landing dock HMAS Canberra , sea trials of sister ship Adelaide now underway, and the in-service availability of the 16,190 tonne dock landing ship HMAS Choules .

An Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile fires from HMAS Melbourne's MK-41 vertical launcher during training in the East Australian Exercise Area off the New South Wales coast on 24 June 2015.
The firings were conducted against an unmanned aerial target launched from the Beecroft Range at Jervis Bay.

Melbourne is currently conducting mariner and war fighting training in preparation for an operational deployment.

The first Alenia Aermacchi C-27J Spartan tactical airlifter for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) arrived in Australia on Thursday 25 June. The aircraft flew to RAAF Base Richmond following modifications and training in the US, where the aircraft resided ever since first delivery by Italian aircraft manufacturer Alenia Aermacchi.
Australia has ten Spartans on order, all of which are being modified by L-3 Integrated Systems in Waco, Texas. The first aircraft arrived in Waco in March last year, with flight training for RAAF crews starting last December. The aircraft finally departed Waco on 15 June, arriving in Down Under ten days later.
The second aircraft is to arrive in August. The Australian Spartan fleet is to call RAAF Base Amberley home in the end

Replace DHC-4 Caribou retired in 2009, RAAF have a decent and very modern transport fleet with 8 C-17 soon, 12 C-130J, this 10 C-27J and 5 A-330MRTT which help also.

Australian get a fairly small army but effective with powerful/modern arms moreover Australian soldiers are reputable troops for their behavior during WWI and II.
And Australia having no menacing neighbors like the US that is fully available army to form a expeditionnary force.

I think we can say the Air Force will be a all weather force capable to deploy on all theatres and occasions

Those C17 are very up to date and have satellite connection which allows large data files to be emailed and live information update while on the move with the capability to act as a command platform with fast links to ground and air assets

The system is called SATCOM

Australia is to purchase two more KC-30A multirole tanker/transport (MRTT) aircraft from Airbus Defence, to be delivered in 2018 at a cost of about AUD408 million (USD314 million), Defence Minister Kevin Andrews announced on 1 July.
The minister said that an update that included associated conversion costs had been added to the existing acquisition contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the five A330-based KC-30As now in service with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

Cape_St_George_(Cape_class)_Patrol_Boat_for_AUS_Customs_and_Border_Protection.jpg

Pacific Sentinel said:
Austal Limited (Austal) (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce it has delivered Cape Wessel the seventh of eight Cape Class Patrol Boats being supplied to Australian Border Force under a $330 million design, build and in-service support contract.

Cape Wessel is named after the most northerly point of Rimbija Island, the northernmost island of the Wessel Islands group that extends from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory, Australia and into the Arafura Sea.

Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy said that with one remaining vessel to be delivered out of the Cape Class fleet, Austal continued to demonstrate its credentials as a partner of choice for government defence vessel programs and a world leader in patrol boat design, build and sustainment.

“The on-time delivery of Cape Wessel and continued efficiencies across the program reinforce Austal’s capability to reliably build and sustain naval and border protection vessels,” Mr Bellamy said.

“Our team at the Henderson shipyard have again demonstrated their ability to meet contracted timeframes. We have been delivering a Cape Class Patrol vessel approximately every 10 weeks, which is significantly increasing Australian Border Force’s capability to reliably deliver on the Border Protection obligations it undertakes to the Commonwealth of Australia."

“Our Sustainment team continues to grow in line with vessels coming into service to ensure operational availability is achieved.”

The final Cape Class vessel is in the final stages of construction and will be delivered later in the year, in line with the contract.
