Nakhimov.jpg

Naval Today said:
Russian Navy’s heavy nuclear missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov should conclude its modernization works by 2018.

The decision was made during a meeting between the leadership of the Machine-Building plant of Severodvinsk and the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy.

Admiral Nakhimov will receive additional capabilities, advanced systems and armament during this period.

Admiral Viktor Chirkov said that heavy nuclear missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky is expected to start its modernization period as soon as Admiral Nakhimov finishes its upgrade

Some important background. This large, heavily armed, nuclear powered ship, the Admiral Nakhimov, was originally called the Kalinin, has been an enigma for many years.

She was originally launched in April 1986 and commissioned in December 1988. She actually joined the Russian fleet in April 1989...and we all know what was going on in that time frame.

Though new, because of severe financial issues associated with the fall of the Soviet Union, she very rarely went to sea, and by 1999 she was permanently docked in Sevmash awaiting upgrades and repairs. She has pretty much remained there ever since.

The Russians have often spoken of, and planned her refit/upgrades/repairs...but very little has come of it. Here's a brief histur:

She sat for several years dockside at Sevmash. Then, in 2006, a supposedly firm decision was made to modernize her. The refit actually began there at Sevmach and was initially reported by the Russians as complete ahead of schedule. But then, within a few months, reports stated that the cruiser was still docked at Sevmash, with her refit incomplete, and actully docked there without any activity at all. We skip forard to October of 2008 when the Russian Navy announced that the first modification on the Nakhimov had only then been started and that the ship would re-join the Russian Navy by 2012. Again two years passed.

Then in November 2010 the Director at Sevmash repeated the same statement from 2008 and confirming that the Russian government had finally appropriated funding for the repair and refit of the Nakhimov starting in 2011. Later thoughm they stated that the funding were insufficient to bring the ship back to active service, and that more funding would be necessary. At that time the decision was made for the refit to definitely not be complete by 2012. Then, in 2011, the new director at Sevmash, General-Director Andrei Dyachkov, stated that the repairs simply had to be stopped because it made no sense to continue refitting the vessel without finalizing what the configuration of the vessel would be when complete. And so things remained until last year (2014) we were told (again) that Work on modernizing the Admiral Nakhimov had resumed. That's when we got the first indications that the a new schedule for the vessel to rejoin the Russian Navy would be 2018.

After all of this, pardon me if I do not believe that she is repaired until I see her actually making way away from the yeards. It is like many of the other great plans and schemes the Russians have had the last few years...which then simply did not materialize. I will believe it now when I see it.

Good to hear! I did not think that they would place this vessel back into service. After 16 years if neglect I would have assumed she was beyond servicing.

Mirage, please read my comments to the thread after the article.

I posted the following after I gave a full history of how the vessel has set since 1999:

If they accomplish it...great, I will give them complete credit. But this is about the 4th time they have said that they would do so.

Jeff, my friend I am in agreement with you that I did not think that this vessel was worth and, or capable of being salvaged. Good for them if they can, however the resources placed in making this vessel operation could be invested in newer vessels and provide a greater return on the investment.

I guess that this news, out of Russia, could probable be filled along with other propaganda articles including increased shoe lace production and the ……. I think I need to go read 1984 again get my doublethink and newspeak in order again.

. The developed Russian scientists humanoid battle robot to the end of 2015 to learn to run and pass the obstacle course, told RIA Novosti the head of the Foundation for Advanced Studies (FPI) Andrei Grigoryev.

"Fighting robot android that looks like a person, according to our plans to the end of the year will have been able to run, pass the obstacle course and perform other actions. Its purpose - a work in highly dangerous conditions, where you need the presence of a man with remote management. The goal is that the person was in a normal situation, and the robot working in a dangerous area "- said

According to him, the robot can be used for mine clearance and other dangerous, but do not require a particularly delicate operations tasks (more accurate data in the fund is not shown). This robot "is not designed to run with a gun": it has other tracked and wheeled platforms that successfully solve such problems, said

. Robotic engineers Russian production may occur in service of EMERCOM of Russia in the next three years, told RIANovosti Deputy head of the Centre for rescue operations special risk "Leader" Alexey Kudyakov.

New robots for clearing mines will go to the troops of the Russian Federation
"Now we exploit the Swedish and German robotic systems for explosive hazards. In Rzhev we have a complex for solid cleaning the area, also imported... At present we are monitoring the market identifies several manufacturers of such equipment in Russia. In the procurement plan for the needs of the Ministry of emergency situations, this technique may appear in the years 2016-2018," — said the representative of the MOE.

He noted that the proposals of a number of domestic enterprises are not satisfied with the Agency, because their development is more like a "constructor" of the same import parts, with a fairly high price for the service. But it was possible to find such producers from Russia, who make "good models of robots for demining".
"For example, in Kubinka collect robotic systems for continuous cleaning of the area (from explosive devices). This production is nearly equivalent, according to some characteristics even better than the imported samples. It is wider functionality, more technical possibilities. Therefore, we can say that the work on the replacement of similar imported domestic has already begun," said Kudyakov.

the representative of the United instrument Corporation (OPK, part of Rostec state Corporation).

Originally planned to use the intellectual complex for military equipment, but in the future may also spread to civilian purposes.
United instrument Corporation has completed the development and began testing a software system for centralized and decentralized control of a group of robotic systems, which minimizes the human involvement in the control of machines and allows the robots to operate more or less independently," — said the Agency interlocutor.

He explained that the Corporation developed the "brain" will manage heterogeneous robots in the team may include aerial and underwater vehicles, ground vehicles for different purposes. The operator directs the group, and the tasks in it are distributed independently.

"The machine is able to make smart decisions in unusual situations in real time. Robots to independently overcome unexpected obstacles, such as fallen tree, select the optimal path dynamically reassigning tasks", — said the representative of the defence industry. IN addition, allow yourself to replace a knocked-out robots.

Precision Engineering Design Bureau named. AE Nudelman develops option to install its newest anti-aircraft missile complex "Pine" on small displacement vehicles.

"We have created marine complexes" Palma "have a serious weight: 6.9 tonnes at ZAC" Palma "and up to 7.2 tons - at SPAR" Palma ". These complexes can be equipped with only vessels with a displacement of 500 tons. At present, we are working on the issue of installing small ships with a displacement of less than 500 tons of military unit from SAM "Pine". The ship immediately gets new qualities defeats the purpose - in range and height, respectively, 10 and 5 kilometers, "- told RIA" Novosti "deputy general director of" high-precision systems, "the managing director of CB Tochmash Vladimir Slobodchikov.

According to him, mounted on small vehicles complex will be able to shoot and airplanes and helicopters, and surface and
