The whole point of needing Crimea was to ensure the Russian navy's supremacy in the region. Why would they need a land route for that?
But Turkey is already or will be without a doubt in the next 5 years the biggest naval power in the Black Sea region... And it won't change in the foreseeable future.

Nope. Basically , with the control of Crimea Russians control central part of Black Sea . Anti-ship missile batteries from Crimea cover most significant parts of it. Coupled with SAM systems, naval aviation and probably ballistic systems like Iskander , it's a formidable force even without ships . And let's face it, without help of NATO Turks are nowhere near either on technological or pure force level to challenge that .

I think it is completely incorrect to say that the Ukrainian forces shelled a playground.

It makes it sound like that the playground was their target and we both know it was not.

It is more correct to say a Ukrainian shell landed in a playground...the absolute most likely it being an errant shell.

Sadly, tragically...these things happen in war and it is not limited to one side or the other.

Jeff is right. Even with the best of accuracy, range finding and aiming of targets with corrected coordinates all kinds of weather, humidity, and sudden wind change could carry that shell out of target.

Yes you are right. News media bias. It is interesting to note how headlines change from the Daily Telegraph, La Nacion, Wall Street Journal, or the New York Times.

Georgian ex-President Saakashvili named Ukraine regional governor
  • 31 May 2015
Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been appointed governor of Ukraine's southern Odessa region.

Announcing the surprise move in the Black Sea port of Odessa, President Petro Poroshenko said Mr Saakashvili had been granted Ukrainian citizenship.

Mr Saakashvili is widely credited with carrying out radical reforms in Georgia during his terms in office in 2004-13.

However, current Georgian authorities accuse him of abuse of power and have demanded his extradition.

Mr Saakashvili left Georgia after his term as president ended in 2013. He denies the charges against him, which he says are politically motivated.
