This is the Japanese Military News Thread.

It is not a knock Japan thread. It is not a thread to make veiled comments trying to equate current day Japan to the Empire of Japan and its past actions.

We have specific rules in SD about this type of thing whether directed at China, Germany, Japan, etc. and past historical activities.

READ THE RULES.

Any more of this will result in Warnings and Suspensions.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION

Then also this new news?

Japan to build two Additional Atagos

Which LM will also supply the aegis systems.
Well, we already pretty much knew this. We will thank posters for not using WantChinaTimes.

Just too many inaccuracies in their articles, and too often very hyped.

In this case we knew that the JMSDF had the funding and the schedule for these vessels.

One starting this year, and the other starting next year. probably to be in service in 2017 and 2018. This will be a fine addition to the JMSDF and bring them up to eight AEGIS DDGs.

The Kongos like the Flight I & II Burkes (with the helo landing pad). The Atagos like the Flight IIA Burkes (with the full helo hanger).

All Armed Services of the JMSDF are highly trained and professional forces. Their Defence Industries (Mitsubishi, IHI etc.) have long traditions and experience in manufacturing their own ships, aircraft and other weaponries, & have been cooperating with friendly allies like the US in some areas of military equipment development programs. Their Defence Forces are prepared to respond forcefully to any would be aggressor.

But Atago class get SSM no Austin.
Also an important point rarely mentioned all SM-1/2 have secondary capability against naval targets, they are supersonic but no sea skimming with a warhead inferior to Harpoon 125 kg vs 220.
SS-N-14 with her torpedo can also attack ships exist also a variant with a warhead.

The US government this week announced that it will expand its cybersecurity partnership with Japan, amid growing concerns over potential attacks against military bases and other infrastructure on the island nation. As

"a growing level of sophistication."

"We note a growing level of sophistication among malicious cyber actors, including non-state and state-sponsored actors, who are increasingly willing to demonstrate their intent and ability to do harm against information systems, critical infrastructure and services upon which our people, economies, governments, and defense forces rely," the US Department of Defense and Japan's Ministry of Defense said in a

the US of fueling an "internet arms race." China's Defense Ministry is similarly critical of Washington's partnership with Japan, saying it will only heighten tensions in the region.

Whereas the US has invested heavily in cyber defense systems in recent years, Japan is looking to bolster its forces ahead of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. The country's cyber defense unit only includes about 90 people, a Defense Ministry official said Thursday, compared to more than 6,000 at the Pentagon.

What is an Austin?
When you say SSM I am guessing you mean SSM-1 but never heard of a Anti-ship missile named Austin.
He's talking about the Flight IIA Burkes.

The first of which was the Oscar Austin, DDG-79. Some people like to call them a new class.

They did not include the Quad Canister Harpoons that the earlier Burkes had.

He means that the Atago has those quad canister SSMs and the Oscar Austin Burkes on do not.

Of course, ultimately the Flight IIA Burkes and Flight III too will receive the ability to load out and launch LRASMs, so I expect in the end the "Austin" will be very adequately armed for ASuW.

OK now I see.
Well TRDI is developing a ship launch type type 12 ASM that would probably be on line in the near future.

As you can see in the chart, the anti ship missiles deployed by the three arms of JSDF are actually progression of ASM-1 air launch missile which was turned into ground based SSM-1 which become SSM-1B ship launched type.

The type 12 is a progression of SSM-1 adding GPS mid-stage targeting and vertical launch capabilities and finally it is being altered so it can be launched from a ship based VLS.

Can't really find any info of when it will be ready but I am hoping it will be ready by the time the advanced Atagos are launched.
