You see, I do not necessarily see it that way.

Those Type 071s were designed to carry four LCACs. From the get go.

They now have four such vessels and only two LCAC active and another two fitting out.

Clearly, the PLAN is intending on the LCAC mission. They thought it out and built excellent vessels (at great cost) which feature that capability. So, it is clearly important to them.

Perhaps the two new ones fitting out represent an update/upgrade and if they work out, we will see more built.

Compared to other vessels (like the Type 056), LCACs are builds that can occur at several places and could be built up rapidly if the PLAN had a design they were prepared to do so with. I mean look at how quickly they are building larger, more complex, Type 056s...or for that matter, how quickly they built up the Type 22 catamaran missile FACs.

We shall see what these next two LCACs do and perhaps get a hint from that

The PLAN is making good use of these vessels.

They have seen lots of activity in the SCS, they have also sent them to the anti-piracy missions (the 6th, 14th, and 17th missions), they have seen lots of involvement in the Malaysia Airline search, as well as through the Suez canal into the Med.

I imagine if a PLAN ship was designated 13 that would be closer to 44.

666 for much of the english speaking world I think is a different kind of morbid humour rather than simply unluckiness, there's a much more specific end-times religious aspect to 666.

ive been wondering a few things in regards to the expected size of an upcoming PLAN LHD. As i understand from searching the infinite wisdom of the internet but otherwise completly lackning knowledge :
China dont have either a heavy transport helicopter or an amphib tracked apc like the one us use, so we are the starting with the big one instead something in the 8-16000 tons range with could still be used in antipiracy and skirmish amphib asw eller as provide training in multiple helicopter handling. In other words arent 40000 tons a bit overkill? It seems a bit out of sync with the otherwise meticulously planed fleet expansion...

Transport helicopter is expected to be modernized Z-8 variant, which is in the same class as AW101. There is Z-20 in prototype stage and a recently concluded deal with Russian to develop heavy transport helicopter in CH-53E class

When it comes to amphibious tracked vehicles, China is currently without equal. PLA has a complete family of high speed amphibious IFV, tanks, SPG and support variants in service.
