Notice the WS-10B (Improved WS-10) engine.

So they're not WS-10 engines?

YEs and NO ... it is indeed a WS-10 but surely not a WS-10B since this type is only suitable for the J-10B, whereas the Flankers use the WS-10A and maybe (at least said to be) WS-10H.

The difference is the position of the gearbox, which is for all Flankers on top of the engine (AL-31F and WS-10A), whereas the J-10 all have an engine with the gearbox on the bottom ... as such the AL-31F became the AL-31FN and the WA-10A the WS-10B.

As of now the AL-31 is not in limited supply China has plenty of those engines to go around
Didn't they Russians already said that they will supply AL-31s only to J-11As and J-10A/Bs, since J-11Bs and J-15s are technically "illegal copies" of Su-27 and Su-33? Plus, the AL-31s for the J-11As are probably less powerful than the WS-10A (as most sources said), so I guess the AL-31s for the J-15s are probably either AL-31FN or newer versions of AL-31s.

So I think we can assume that either the footage was a mix of old and new clips or that theres still some prototype fighters although the carrier has its air wing
