Apparently, this is called "05式战略步枪" which translate to "Type 05 strategic assault rifle".
If you don't believe me google it! As I have answered it in another thread :

Could one of you fine gentlemen translate this caption? Thank you.

解放军已开始使用05式战略步枪训练

The wording in chinese is a bit weird.

"The PLA has started using Type 05 strategic assault rifle for training".

战略 means "strategic". I think they meant "战术" which means "tactical" which would make much more sense as in:

"The PLA has started using Type 05 tactical assault rifle for training".

Unless I am mistaken what this new Type 05 assault rifle fires... maybe it fires nuke grenades then naming it "strategic" assault rifle wouldn't be out of place. ;)

Someone explained at the tiexue board why it is called "strategic assault rifle":

"顾名思义, 战略步枪是射程为10000KM以上,子弹为100万吨以上TNT当量的核子弹。" =

"As the name suggested , strategic assault rifle has an effective firing range of more than 10000 km, with 1 megaton TNT equivalent nuclear warhead as bullets."

I guess that's why they need the fancy scope because they are aiming across the pacific ocean to fire their nuke bullets!

So look out America! China is arming its troops with nuclear tipped assault rifles!

:D

Such use of weird wording probably for counter-censorship purposes, besides the offical designation haven't announced yet.

BTW, there seems to be no Labour Day open house event this year, because the local scene is heating up once again and we're very likely looking at the 2nd wave of insurgency kicks off as early as Labour Day, or as late as July 1st (but should the deliberation goes, according to schedule, on June 16th, it could happen at that time too).

In short, the PLA HK Garrison is on combat alert as of now. That said, no chance to see OICW in the coming future, I afraid.

But equally unlikely that we see the OICW gets deployed either, should things goes hot in the next 3 months.

MwRYum, would you happen to have any information or pictures of the riot equipment of the Hong Kong police? I'm curious to see what mix of British and/or Chinese equipment they have.

The optic must be streaming video to his helmet mounted display. This shows one of the reasons why weapon programs like this one are and have been established. Urban combat.
By using the optic and helmet mounted display the soldier can safely aim his weapon probe around a obstacle and lay fire on hidden enemies with little exposure to himself and his squad.
Now this capability is not impossible to give to less specialized elements, we all of course know of the Israelis CornerShot systems. Cornershot being a modern version of the periscope rifle a concept dating back to the world war one trenches of Flanders Fields.
. Yet even more simplified options for this are available. Mounting a electronic optic on the regular issue carbine has been trialed in France, the US, Germany, and with the Russian Ratnik program. But even more simple versions such as a red dot sight and a prism are also options.

It's more lethal in this combination because now the soldier can aim and shoot smart grenades around corners too. Those could actually take out enemies behind covers instead of just suppressing them.

well kinda sorta... the actual explosive power of a airburst 20mm shell is comparatively small
impact for maximum killing effects is almost direct. that said this would be a force enabler and allow for neutralizing of small numbers of adversaries in single shots as opposed to having to engage multiple adversaries individually. long run as programmable Air-burst tech is moved to larger 40mm Grenades it may be come a better option but still the lethal range is only 5 meters
