Considering 055 will have four QC-280 gas turbine engines each generating 28MW, I would expect it should be ~5,000 tonnes heavier than 052D which is 8,000 tonnes and have 2 QC-280

Well the DDG 1000 has two 39mw RR MT30s and it displaces 15000 tons. In any case you decide how big a ship needs to be based on operational requirements and then find an appropriate engine for it, not the other way around.

That's the reason people are trying to use engines to deduce likely displacement.

The PLAN would have determined the engine requirements based on the operational requirements of the ship, which includes displacement, so looking at the engine arrangement they settled upon would give clues as to what those operational requirements and the displacement of the ship might be.

Don't forget the new frigate.

Powerplant configuration considerations are one of the reasons I wouldn't expect the new frigate to be much less than half 055 displacement, i.e. 6000+ tons full load.

Of course everybody knows that, we are trying to "guess" the tonnage of the 055 from the number of engines ... we all here just have an educated guess of most of PLAN new features .... thats why this forum is so interesting and exciting.

My point is that something as large as the DDG 1000 can have the same powerplant as an Independence class LCS. Therefore, engines are a very rough indicator of displacement.
