The Argentina air force has sent a technical team to China to discuss a possible buy of 12 to 24 Chengdu JF-17 Xiaolong (Thunder) combat aircraft, seen here armed with anti-ship missiles. (Chinese Internet photo)

BUENOS AIRES --- Argentina is talking with China about buying up to 24 FC-1 / JF-17 fighters capable of reaching the Falklands, as confirmed by the Minister of Defence, Agustín Rossi. He said that an official delegation will travel to China next week to begin the talks.

"The Chief of Staff of the Air Force (Mario Miguel Callejo) is going to China with a technical mission to explore the possibility of purchasing" the fighters, Rossi confirmed as he accompanied President Cristina Fernandez in announcing an investment of $930 million to equip the Army.

Argentina’s interest in the Chinese fighters was first reported by the London Sunday Express newspaper The possibility was first raised as part of the trade agreements signed by Fernandez during her recent trip to China.

“The aircraft is a single-seat, single-engine design capable of a top speed of Mach 1.8 at an altitude of 55,000 feet. It also has a combat range of 1,350 kilometers, which allows him to fly back and forth to Stanley from the base of Tierra del Fuego," Rossi explained during an interview with Radio America.

Rossi declined to give many details of the talks but confirmed that the intention is to buy "not less than 12 and not more than 24" aircraft. If the agreement did indeed materialize, he said it would be "something new for Argentina’s Air Force, which has always had Western equipment."

The defense minister said that China is not the only country with which negotiated for the purchase of fighter planes. For the moment, Argentina has "two formal offers" for Spanish Mirage F-1s and Israeli Kfir Block 60s. "We also have an informal French offer," he said, but avoided giving details.

Argentina will make its decision once all formal offers are on the table, but the intention is that it should happen before the end of the year. "Then, I'll take the options to the President to make the decision," Rossi confirmed.

Does anyone know if these new block II planes have already recieved the new RD-93MA engines. And if not does anyone know when that will be.

Apparently RD-93MA completion is 2019. Allegedly based on the RD-33MKR which is the next upgrade up from the RD-33MK.

This may tie in with Block 3 JF-17. Yes, the document says Fc-1 so that reduces the argument that the RD-93MA would be specifically a J-31 engine.

Guys ... i would be very careful with such expectations: AESA, stealthy modifications, new engines or whatever ... it all depends on the availability of money andt he political options.

Besides that - as someone mentioned the Saudi interest - many reports are simply politically motivated to receive a better offer from another seller. IMO I don't think that Saudi Arabia is truely interested and even more would pay for the EJ-200. Additionally I don't think that any European country will deliver such a modern engine to China for integration work ....

As such I simply do't think that Pakistan alone could afford to pay the cost for a new Radar and additional structural modifications ... it is a now reliable and cost-effective fighter - as such i is already a scess - and everything else depends on so many different factors ....

Just my 2 Cents,

That is correct, the whole Saudi rumor was just plain comical. Given the historical track record of that country, they wouldn't be half-serious about buying anything other than Anglo-European or American military hardware.

But lets just circle back to the Block-III "expectations" ...... there is no illusion about what options there are available for the JF-17 Thunder. Pakistan has already experienced the predictable sway of military industries' and their very blunt way of shunning smaller contracts in a bid to get the larger and more lucrative orders.

And when it comes to acquisitions, Pakistan Air Force will "put it's money where it's mouth is", if the particular hardware is essential to it's operational requirements. Which is why, when a statement comes out, where a PAF official says that they will be looking into getting an AESA radar for the JF-17 Thunders. You can be darn sure that they will get it done. Be it Western, Chinese or Russian.

What remains to be seen, is whether Pakistan Air Force considers if it is worth the effort to go for a Western AESA radar.

Personally, I believe that Pakistan Air Force will go for a mix, with both Chinese and Western AESA radars for the JF-17 Thunders.

Hmmm ... How confirmed is this report ??? I know it's been floating around a s a rumor since some time ....

Pakistan AF Chief visited Myanmar and acquisition of JF 17 for Myanmar AF was signed. Total of 34 JF 17 will be delivered to Myanmar within 3 years. 32 MiG 29 SEs and 34 JF 17s are more than enough for Myanmar AF. Myanmar is also getting 4 new Y-8DII medium transport ac and 1 Y 8 AEW ac from China.
