Stories of life in China

If I won $50 million, I sure as hell would not be remaining in Canada!

It's amazing why people do the kind of things they do to lottery winners!
I mean there are many thousands of people who has that kind of dough all the time but you don't see total strangers doing all that.

Heck couple weeks ago I was in a function that has a couple attendees that's worth at least $20 mil easy and you don;t see folks coming out of the woodwork getting their share of undeserved $.

You certainly don't see complete strangers rubbing people like Bill Gates for good luck (at least not that I heard) and he is wealthier than all the lottery winners put together.

by the way, I might have some articles or stories that could be more critical sometimes. to me the point when I post in here won't even be to discuss them, but rather to share and move on. you guys can feel free to post anything, positive or negative or whichever. (in fact i kinda encourage some positive news or stories to be shared if you guys find some so this thread can be more balanced.)

thanks!
I honestly don't see a lot of point to a thread like this, but I can see many ways it can degrade. A while ago, you just complained to us bitterly because an issue you refused to drop and carried through in PM resulted in another member using derogatory language against you. And now you are starting a thread with the caution that it might be critical. I don't see how this is anything but a forum for you to air complaints against mainlanders.

Actually I was invited into the PM conversation, and quickly it resulted in one of the participants firing personal attacks at me and my family. No matter what I said and how opinions could be in disagreement, I don't see how personal attacks and mentioning someone's family is in any time, acceptable or justifiable.

As for this thread, I mentioned from the start that my intentions was to create a platform for sharing any spectrums of views and stories.I probably won't even get involved in discussing many of the stories, perhaps probably even ones that I post myself. I had also made it clear I hoped this thread can carry stories and angles of all forms, whether it be good, critical, experiential, whatever. That said, along with my intentions, I don't see how it's meant for airing complaints. Finally, if bringing a more critical opinion is considered complaint, then that's just saying something about this space not very accepting of alternative viewpoints.

I had been in this forum for years and many senior members should know where I formerly stood in perspectives. I started in this forum in the more pro-China perspectives, but I realized very quickly that means I could be missing alternative perspectives and opinions at the time, so now I'm exploring other spectrums.

The Communist Party of China has affirmed its love for venture capitalism... as long as it can help Beijing launch more start-ups and create more jobs.

The State Council, China’s cabinet, issued an order on Thursday to all ministries and local governments to give support at all levels to innovation and start-up related businesses in order to make them new engines of national economic growth.

China should catch up with other countries and "encourage the general public to start their own businesses,” said the State Council in a statement published online.

“Hundreds of thousands of people’s passion for innovation should be encouraged to build up the new engine for economic development,” the statement said, adding that this trend also reflected the “key spirit” of high-level Communist Party meetings chaired by president Xi Jinping.

The State Council statement said that the government would encourage technology experts and university students to start their own businesses. Students will be able to apply for space and funds from the government in order to help get their companies off the ground.

This year, one of the government's key economic targets is job creation as Beijing cut its economic growth target to 7 percent, the least in more than two decades. Premier Li Keqiang said recently that there would be 7.49 million university graduates this year, a record high. High unemployment could affect social stability, one of the primary concerns for the ruling party.

In the meantime, the government will also focus on how to attract venture capital funds – one of the main funding sources for technology start-ups worldwide – and angel investors who often support early-stage companies, betting on their big potential for fast growth in years to come.

The government must “promote financing for technology start-ups, improve the funding and investment exit system of venture capital funds and angel investors,” the State Council statement said.

Chinese banks should also create new branches and business departments to provide financing support for technology related small- and medium-sized enterprises, the statement said, adding that Beijing would also make relevant approval processes more efficient and reduce red-tape.

In Premier Li Keqiang's speech at the National People's Congress, he debuted his new “Internet Plus” strategy, focusing on web-powered start-ups and how new technology can be applied to traditional sectors such as agriculture and transportation.

Communist Party mouthpiece the People's Daily described the strategy as being as important as the Industrial Revolution. It remains to be seen however how a push for online innovation will coexist with China's strict internet censorship and filtering.

Pony Ma Huateng, founder and chief of mainland internet giant Tencent recently said that Chinese people should not focus entirely on dotcom businesses, saying that web firms should play a supporting role for other traditional sectors.

"The internet has opened new frontiers including internet finance, medical services, and education that didn't exist before,” Ma said.

“It should be also extending to traditional industries like manufacturing, energy, and agriculture.”

Beijing’s big push for technology innovation and start-ups comes as the US Nasdaq stock index, which is dominated by tech firms, returned to and surpassed the 5,000 point mark in recent weeks. The index first reached the 5,000 mark on Mar 9, 2000. Soon after that, the US economy was dragged into the so-called “dotcom crisis” due to the sudden devaluing of many internet businesses.

Like Typhang I also wonder about the point of this thread.
If I was reading about the normal experience of everyday life of ordinary people, throughout the social strata and seeing them compared and contrasted with their peers in different provinces/regions I would be very happy.

Sadly I also suspect a trojan horse thread and will be watching very closely.

Airsup definitely does not have the intention of starting any contentious debate. This thread can be a place to gossip or chat about any interesting or major events or incidents in China. In the Chinese Daily photos thread, we discuss about anything that happens, but we tend to get in the way of the pictures. Anything like unusual, incidents, accidents, disasters, crimes, women, festivals, etc are fair game.

This is why in my first post I hoped others contribute too. I couldn't contribute everything by myself after all, and I mean, I come by stray articles here and there and that's when I really wanna share them.

Thanks. This is also why threw in that yellow bear article, which referenced to China shortly. I find that quite amusing

I don't really care what your perspectives are. I just have problem with threads that cause a lot of problems. If you create thread with knowledge that what you are posting causes dispute, then you are just bringing problems to moderators. And now you are brining only your perspective of the argument for everyone to read.

This is a forum on Chinese military. That's our focus here. If harmony is broken for something other than that, it's simply not worth it from the moderator's perspective.
