and I decided to translate what "Cassad" says Russia got so far from the Ukraine conflict (again, it's just my quick translation):

1. weakening Russian economy; it won't stop, especially if the US continues to deflate the price of oil, as this will drag the Ruble and the social security system

2. the necessity of an actual military participation in the conflict, while not having the possibility to decrease Russia's presence without risking the defeat of

3. the destruction of pro-Russian movements and organizations on the Junta-controlled territory

4. crumbling of the pro-Putin majority formed after the Crimea [invasion]

5. the Cold War with the USA and a threat of coup d'état

6. the consolidation of Junta state authorities, which achieved a partial legitimity, are fully backed up by the West (in terms of the supply of money, weaponry, "consultants", intelligence, specialized equipment), and are openly anti-Russian

7. an absence of any guarantees:
of Ukraine staying out of Alliances;
related to the future of Russian-speaking population in Ukraine;
of possibilities to legally establish pro-Russian political parties and movements in Ukraine;

Interestingly enough, large part of Russian public (maybe even majority) is against current Putin's policy in Ukraine, because they consider it to be too soft . In other words, they are dissatisfied because Russian government recognized "Junta" in Kiev, because Moscow was slow to help the rebels, because many civilians died in Ukrainian army attacks (and continue dying) without Moscow doing much , because oligarchs close to Putin continue to move money out of the country and spend it in the West etc ...

Since WW2 , recurring theme in Soviet and later Russian politics (and you may say in Russian mind ) is never allow 1941 to happen again . For non-Russians this is probably hard to grasp, but German attack in 1941 and casualties suffered because unpreparedness (despite having army much larger and with more tanks,airplanes,guns etc ... ) caused deep psychological trauma . From Russian point of view , whole crisis in Ukraine was masterminded in the West , in order to bring down and destroy Russia (and unfortunately there is some truth in that) .

In the mind of average Russian , WW3 is very close . Unlike Westerns, Russians are generally mentally prepared for hardships it would bring (death, destruction, suffering, privations etc ) . What they do not understand is why certain parts of society , those close to Putin , continue to lead affluent lifestyles, try to arrange deals with the West , sell them oil and other resources in exchange for Western currencies etc ... For average Russian , this is something akin to Soviet trains transporting goods to Germany right until start of German attack in June 22, 1941 .

Colonel Cassad represents large part of the Russian society (from broad political spectrum, from extreme left to extreme right) wanting to switch to war economy. In other words, since war with the West is almost inevitable, let's prepare as best as we could , mobilizing whole population like we did in WW2 , producing as much weapons as we could etc ... Dangerous thing is that West still considers that if they topple Putin they would bring back pro-Western "liberals and democrats" like in 90's . Reality on the ground is that Putin-Medvedev duo is probably best option for the West right now . anything else could very well bring people like Colonel Cassad to power .

good post, Thud (I say this while disagreeing with its content :) just one related, funny thing I noticed: in the discussions below articles on the "Cassad" site, the most offensive is "you liberal" LOL)

but it's the Ukraine Revolt/Civil War thread so I checked the daily summaries for Dec 10 on the hard-core servers:

and they say so far both sides have been observing the latest truce (except of isolated incidents of gunfire -- no side reported artillery fire) ... is this because the snow-cover became too thick in Donbass?

In the minds of large part of Russian public, words like "liberal" and "democrat" are connected to 90's , Yeltsin's era , poverty, lawlessness and humiliation of Russia . Identifying yourself as such would not win you many friends among Russians . :D

If Russia mobilizes, Ukraine will as well and do so under support from the West. In an industrial war, the winner is the last to arm with the latest technology in largest numbers. For this reason, the proposal to switch to a war economy in Russia now is a sign of weakness and highlights that the effects of COCOM were easily forgotten. Russia is digging themselves ever deeper into a hole and they need to get out in order to avoid hurting themselves too much. Russia is no worldpower with its economy and population size. They should be satisfied with Crimea and understand their limits.
Quite interesting where Chechens turn up as fighters, but if you know about life in their homelands, these wars are a better way of life for them.
