This photo was taken during a visit by Xi. He was on base to observe take-off and group successive landings training.

The formation you see here is common for aircraft returning to land in group. Then one by one they will make multiple circling around the carrier before landing. The time taken between the laps would be the time needed to recover the previous plane that have landed and in this manner they can land planes in quick succession. For daylight conditions on USN carriers the time gap is 30 seconds. For bad conditions or night landing this time is extended to 1 minute 45 seconds or even longer.

近日，有网友于辽宁省某地拍摄到了国产歼-15舰载战斗机四机密集编队飞行的照片，而此前据外媒报道，解放军在辽宁省兴城建有一个舰载机综合试验训练基地。据推测该海军某舰载机综合试验训练基地即为兴城舰载机基地。而另据新华社2013年8月28日的报道，中共中央总书记、国家主席、中央军委主席习近平当天在海军某舰载机综合试验训练基地观看舰载机滑跃起飞、阻拦着陆训练后亲切接见首批上舰指挥员、试飞员代表。　

此前，在中国首部关于辽宁舰舰载机编队训练的官方视频中，曾从多个角度记载了我国首款舰载战斗机歼-15在辽宁号上训练的珍贵影像，但如此密集的四机编队飞行照片尚属首见。

据分析，四机楔形编队是舰载机返航着舰三转弯前的常用队形，一般四机保持这个队形逆向飞越航母左舷后，将逐一逐一解散，向左进入三转弯，然后在到达航母着舰中心线后方延长线处进行四转弯，对正下滑道着舰。战机与战机三转弯间隔时间刚好是前一架飞机下滑着舰到收回着舰钩，滑出着舰区所需的时间。这样，四架战机将能以很小的间隔时间，尽快降落到航母甲板。参考美国航母的规定，如果是白天天气良好的情况下，此时着舰的间隔时间为30秒，如果是夜晚或天气不好，这个时间将拉长到45秒至1分钟，甚至更长。在天气良好的情况下，飞行员必须能依靠菲涅尔透镜的信号着舰，完全保持无线电静默，此时LSO(着舰指挥官)只观察飞机着机姿态，不时用送话器向飞行员下达修正指令，如果飞行员着舰下滑轨迹严重偏离，将直接控制菲涅尔透镜发出“复飞”信号终止着舰。

歼-15舰载战斗机能够进行密集楔形编队低空飞行，意味着中国海军航空兵舰载机飞机员已经能够进行编队着舰，这是中国“辽宁号”航母形成战斗力的一个极其重要的步骤。(图：那只兔子，文：张云鹏 李小健)

I think this may mean that the ground crews have gotten proficient at aircraft handling.
