Do not run... we are your friends! (Shoots someone)
Do not run... we are your friends! (Shoots else)

*repeat*

That was absolutely classic... now from the viewpoints of the Martians...

The stock in trade answer to this question and the one most Politicians would adhere to, is to remember the experience of Pre-Columbian Mezo America.

This was a story of a "discovered world" found by a significantly more technologically advanced people. The history rather speaks for itself

There's a difference, the Euopeans had the ability to manufacture weaponry in numbers that the mezo's had no ability to do so. Certaintly abiriginals could use guns when they got captured but the abiriginals could not manufacture them themselves.

However should've the Indians resisted the Spaniads at the beaches, captured their guns and after a few decades built their own you could imagine eventually the mezo's couldve advanced to the same point as the europeans based simply on backwards engineering.

We being an industrialized civilization is leagues beyond the early rennainsance civilizations in methods, numbers, and ideals, if aliens invaded we would depending on the circumstances may be able to learn from them, backards engineer it and strike back.

good luck with reverse engineering. even with present day technology, it's hard to reverse engineer with similar levels of tech. for example. it takes years for china to reverse engineer russian equipment. and there's maybe only a 10-20 year gap in the technology or even less.

comparing us to aliens is more like comparing us now to romans. the romans just simply can't reverse engineer a F-22 or a nuke. maybe they can reproduce a Ak-47, and the ammo that goes with it, but anything that require technology that they never even dreamed about such as jets, rockets, titanium/aluminum they can't produce. and where are we going to get the industrial background and economics to build them??? that's assuming we survive the first wave. also their technology might be significantly different from ours, everything we have is based on electricity, they might have discovered something that doesn't exist in our part of the universe and base all their technology on that. also what about raw materials?? if the alien's home world is abundent in gold, and have everything made in gold and only works with gold, are we going to use the entire world's gold reserve to build a spaceship??

now if there's an alien race that comes to earth, they could totally bombard earth until it's a wasteland from outer space and we can't do anything about it. max we can send a space shuttle to sign the official surrender papers. it's not going to be like independence day where they actually come to earth and let you have a swing at them.

depends, Harry Turtledove wrote a pretty interesting series based on the premise of 21st century level aliens invading earth in 1942 during wwii before Stalingrad took place.

Humans got the A-bomb about 3 years before they did, got jets earlier, sams rockets and all kinds of stuff earlier.

like the aliens had A1A2 Abrams kinda of tanks vs say the German Panther/Panzers.

But the thing is based on our current understanding of physics and chemistry and such we should to be able to reverse engineer it assuming that our science is right.

Also they dont have to be 1,000,000 years more advanced or even 10,000 years, 1,000 years more likely but it is possible to reverse engineer their technology based on the right circumstances.

It all really depends on a bunch of factors.

Is it possible to intercept a landing spacecraft as it flies in? This would be applicable to both invading aliens and more conventional targets like say, the space shuttle. By the way, it is very wierd to see Goll without his mod powers in Defencetalk. I have joined there and my name is "thegoldenhorde."

The best chance humanity would have is to use nukes, chemical weapons and biological weapons on the landing sites. If they don't land, basicallly we can go underground and shoot nukes at their spaceships.

The Rome analogy is not quite accurate because people today are, well, smarter. Intelligence increases exponentially, so we should have an eaisier time if we get a little "hint" so to speak from the aliens.

Just because I can, I'll ask what do you think would happen if aliens are discovered by, lets say' radio telescope in the near future. How would that effect international relations here?

intelligence doesn't increase exponentially, because if it does, kids should be learning organic chemistry in elementary school. knowledge is cumulative, but intelligence is not. i'm currently repeating labs guys did to get their PhDs 30 years ago, but it doesnt make me any smarter, because i didn't invent the lab, just learn the theory behind it.

if the aliens are ahead by by 1000 years, they could wipe the floor with us, think how easily we'll be able to wipe out an million man army from a 1000 years ago today. use tanks and apaches, they won't know what hit them..
