There is not much difference! All of them are based on the chassis and turret T-72, M1 and Leopard 2

ZTZ-85-3/88C/96 similar as T-72 MBT

Other than having the basic features of a tank I don't see the similarities especially for the M1 and Leopard.

The "type 96g" is the same tank as the type 96A.

The "type 99a2" does not exist, there does exist a type 99A, but it is not the tank posted, which was merely a modified Type 99 with what looked like additional ERA.

Also in the picture, the Type 96G is using Type 99 picture. which is just wrong.

yes Type 96G is Type 96A, just western vs chinese variant designation. G = Gai = Modified.

But then again, I don't see the point of this post have any meaning. We do however, need a ZTZ-96 thread.

The pictures you have labeled as 96G and 98 are both Type 99. The chassis looks like an elongated T-72 chassis with wider gaps on both sides of the two middle road wheels, the driver is also located in the center.

The Type 96 chassis has wider gaps on both sides of the two front road wheels, the driver is located on the left, and the rear of the chassis is significantly higher and more angular.

What you have labeled as the 99A2 looks like it could be a Type 99 turret on a modified Type 96 chassis where the driver is located in the center. It could also be a test development of the Type 90II or an export model.

I think there is confusion nick-name for the tank, the Type 96A is equipped with a rear cage armor to protect against RPGs

Type 96g does not use cage armor, Instead it can be used composite armor. Front of the Type 96A and Type 96g also design differences. Type 96A is not equipped with explosive reactive armor ERA

Type 96A portion turret designed boxy than the Type 96A, turret Type 96 / 96A still influenced somewhat of T-72. Improved optical viewfinder larger machines, can be equipped with a system similar Shtora Russian or version Chinese.

According to my understanding

Type 90-II, Type 85-III and Type 88C (maybe the first name of the Type 96, similar to T-90 with its first name is T-72BU) is used for exporting and developing into Type 96 (Type 96 MBT 2nd generation but bring the standards of the 3rd generation as the Type 98/99) MBT mainly used in the Chinese army (more than 2500 Type 96 variants and 600 Type 99), this is the third generation model tanks 2nd China (It is similar to the T-72 development to become T-90. But more complicated because China takes more time to study and sample selection copycat MBT NATO and Russia)

Type 98 is used to test and develop into Type 99 aka Type 98G (It is similar to the T-64 development to become T-80).....But I see absolutely no difference between them

Like a car the difference is under the hood and unlike a car the designers are not really interested in formative art to attract consumers.

The difference could be the engine, type of armor, sensors, etc.
