Something building regarding Ukraine?

Two weeks ago, it seemed possible that a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis was both possible and even probable.
For a while the language on both sides was positive and the intent looked honest.
Sadly it looks now like a false dawn. On both the Peace talks and the Gas negotiations, there is little doubt that the Kiev government is not serious in finding a resolution. With the Peace talks, it looks more and more that Kiev is trying to drag things out in the hope that they can crush the rebellion before having to agree to Federal reform.
On the gas price issue, Yatsenyuks demand to be given the same price as offered to Yanokovych is simply ridiculous, especially when the discount on offer, makes the price as good as that to any other European customer.

From the Russian side, there is a clear indication that they are viewing the position of Kiev as little more than a pantomime and that Russia is simply Kiev the rope it needs to hang itself. Strangely enough it is also the Ukraine's western backers that seem intent on encouraging them to take it.

Russia clearly has no intention of letting the rebellion be crushed, hence the start of the release of old reserve equipment; such as the T64 MBT's, to the pro Russian side.

Diplomatically, I think we are now fast approaching the point where Russia can say that it has bent over backwards to try and reach a resolution with the Ukraine, only to be cynically rebuffed by a side not negotiating in good faith. Yesterdays attack on the Russian embassy in Kiev, the blocking by the US, UK and France of a UN resolution condemning the attack and the televised undiplomatic speech by the coup appointed Foreign Minister, while at the scene of the attack, does nothing to dispel this impression.
We are I think coming close to the point where Putin will start taking the gloves off!

The website of my favorite broadcaster says the gas price discussions have ended in failure. So from soon no gas to Kiev?

The US should pick up the bill. Yanukovich got a discount from Russia. Now, you got what you wanted and kicked Russia out of G8. But you, Obama let the people of Ukraine dying in streets

Oh, poor Ukrainians, Obama he got his hands tied to Iraq. If you don't want to see your country like a giant Lebanon, you have to work with East Ukrainians and Russia.

Ukraine crisis: Kiev faces halt of Russian gas supplies

Gazprom has said Ukraine will now have to pay up front for any future Russian gas supplies, after Kiev failed to pay its huge debts.

Russia's gas firm said it acted because of "chronic non-payments" by Kiev.

It earlier warned it could cut supply if Ukraine failed to pay $1.95bn (£1.15bn) by 06:00 GMT.

"We reached no agreement. The chances that we meet again are slim," Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kuprianov said after crisis talks in Ukraine at the weekend.

However, EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger, who attended the talks, said he was "not pessimistic" about a deal.

He said he would continue to work for an agreement despite his compromise proposal, that Kiev pay $1bn on Monday and the rest in instalments, being rejected by Gazprom.

Ukraine's discounted rate for gas was axed in April after Moscow accused Kiev of failing to pays its bills.

Correspondents say the European Union could be affected if Gazprom cuts its supply to Ukraine.

Earlier this month, Gazprom gave Ukraine more time to settle its gas bill after receiving a part-payment of $786m (£469m).

Ukraine said it refused to clear its debts completely in protest at Gazprom's recent 80% price increase.

Gazprom ended its discount price for Ukraine, which was negotiated by former President Viktor Yanukovych last December, in April.

Before the discount was cancelled, Ukraine's gas bill was heavily reduced by Russia to $268 per 1,000 cubic metres.

The price is now $485.50 per 1,000 cubic metres, the highest in Europe.

Almost 15% of gas used in Europe comes from Russia via Ukraine, which is why EU members are taking a particularly close interest in the stand-off, observers say.

The talks that ended on Monday had been brokered by EU representatives.

Heading into the negotiations, Kiev said it was ready to make the $1.95bn payment if Russia cut its price to $326 per 1,000 cubic metres.

But Russian President Vladimir Putin said $385 per 1,000 cubic metres was his final offer.

Prospects of a breakthrough in discussions were diminished in recent days after increasing tension between Kiev and Moscow over the pro-Russian insurgency in the east of Ukraine.

Moscow reacted angrily to a violent protest outside its embassy in Kiev on Saturday after separatists shot down a Ukrainian military plane, killing all 49 people on board.

Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of sending tanks into the east of the country to support pro-Russian fighters.
You cannot expect to get your gas for a friendly price from a party you treat as an enemy.

problem is the United States don't have that much money to throw around these days. you know they going stingy when all Washington could cough up was a whopping $1billion dollars when Obama went to Poland. seriously with the price of things these days what good could a measly $1billion do? it's nice and warm now in the Ukraine but just wait until November and the weather turns cold, then they will realize they have been abandoned by the United States when they have no heat in their homes.

No, but Ukraine can still get Russian gas through resale from another country. Most of the agreements between Russia and many European nations allow for resale of Russian gas to another country.

And it can spur on development of Ukraine's shale oil and gas; Ukraine has Europe's 3rd largest deposits of shale gas at 1.2 trillion cubic metres, with the biggest deposits in Western Ukraine.

From the website of my favorite broadcaster and mostly citing the foreign affairs editor of my newspaper:
President Poroshenko want to talk with the separatists but only after they stop fighting and after he has closed the border between Ukraine and Russia. Also his army is to weak to close more than a fraction of that border.

Giving your armed forces a task they cannot accomplish is a reliable way to ruin.

An explosion has occurred at a major European transit gas pipeline in Ukraine.

A major pipeline in Ukraine carrying gas from Russia to the rest of Europe has been hit by a blast.

Flames could be seen erupting from the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod Pipeline in central Ukraine. No one was reported injured by the explosion.

It is not clear what caused the blast. European and Russian companies said gas exports to the EU were not affected.

On Monday, Ukraine said Russia had cut off gas supplies to the country following a dispute over gas payments.

Hundreds of lives have been lost in fighting in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk and Donetsk provinces, where pro-Russian rebels are battling government forces after declaring independence just over a month ago.

Deliberate explosions?

The blast took place at the pipeline, which is also known as the Trans-Siberian Pipeline, in Poltava province on Tuesday.

Ukraine's gas transport monopoly, a Slovak gas transit firm, and sources at Russian gas producer Gazprom, all told reporters that the transit of gas to Europe would not be affected.

"Exports have not been cut. There is a parallel pipeline," the Gazprom source said.

According to AFP news agency, Ukraine's state emergencies service said it appeared to have been the result of a puncture or loss of pressure.

However, the energy and interior ministries said it could have been an attempted terrorist attack, Reuters reported.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said: "According to local residents, they heard two big bangs just before the explosion which could indicate they were deliberate explosions."

The energy ministry said: "It is not the first attempted terrorist attack on the Ukrainian gas transportation system."

Also on Tuesday, a Russian state TV journalist was killed in a mortar attack near a village outside the city of Luhansk, Russian media reported.

Igor Kornelyuk died in hospital after the attack near Metalist while a colleague, sound engineer Anton Voloshin, was reported missing.

Moscow condemned the killing of the journalist, describing it as a "crime of Ukrainian forces".

Last month, Italian photojournalist Andrea Rocchelli and prominent Russian human rights activist Andrey Mironov, who was accompanying him, were killed by mortar fire in eastern Ukraine.

Gas transit pipeline explodes in Ukraine

An explosion has struck a pipeline in the central Ukrainian Poltava region. Witnesses say flames from the blast are up to 200 meter high.

“The explosion occurred at about 14:45 local time in a field,” the local police press-service said in a statement. Due to the “flame and the high temperatures,” it was “impossible to get closer to the epicenter.”

The “Brotherhood” natural gas pipeline (Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod) is about one kilometer away from the nearest settlement. No injuries have been reported from the blast. Fire fighting crews have been deployed to the scene.

The blaze, which according to the Interior Ministry towered 100 meters high, was put out by “between 4 and 5 pm.”

Pipeline faucets have been temporary turned off, but transit of Russian gas to Europe is being realized through a reserve pipeline.

A preliminary investigation found the explosion was caused by ‘pipeline depressurization’.

Ukraine’s Interior Ministry also cites possible “terrorism” - based on locals “hearing two loud booms before the fire.”

But within just an hour of the blast Ukraine’s acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov blamed Russia.

The Ministry statement decried “Sabotage of a gas pipeline in the Poltava region” as “another attempt by Russia to discredit Ukraine as a gas partner” but didn’t back up such a strong accusation with any additional information.

Operating since 1967, the “Brotherhood” is the largest consumer gas pipeline in Europe, clocking in at 4,451 km. It cuts through Ukraine and runs into Slovakia, where it diverges in two directions; with one part supplying gas to the Czech Republic, Germany, France and Switzerland, and the other to Austria, Italy, Hungary and several countries in the Balkans.

Whether the explosion affects gas supplies to Europe will be seen in the coming days, Russian gas giant Gazprom has said.

At the same time, Ukrainian state gas pipeline and depot operator Ukrtransgas insists that the accident will not affect transit of Russian gas to European consumers.

"[The explosion] clearly did not affect the gas flow," a Ukrtransgaz spokesman said.

The Poltava region, where Ukraine's oil and natural gas industry is concentrated, lies in the center of the country. This territory is under the protection of the Ukrainian army and has not been the scene of fighting between anti-government militias and government forces.

Back in March, the leader of ultranationalist group Right Sector, Dmitry Yarosh, threatened to destroy Russian pipelines on Ukrainian territory to “deprive our enemy [Russia] of its source of income.”
