are you suggesting that the surface search range for the Harrier's radar is greater than 200 km? I honestly don't know. Given the limitation imposed by Earth's curvature (no ionosphere bouncing here), the only advantage the Indian carrier provides is the Harriers, as they haven't received the navalized Fulcrums yet.

Don't they have Helo AEW? Its certainly much greater than the surface search capability of a pure SAG.

According to my source (from 2004) the IN has three Ka-31 AEW choppers 'on order'. These would be quite a benefit if Viraat would meet a SAG in open waters.

The Sea Harriers should not to be underestimated, they have the ability to conduct anti-ship attacks, fighter sweeps, and most importantly they provide a greatly increased recconnaisance capability.

The Gorshkov will mean a quantum leap forward for the IN, with CTOL fighters in the form of the MiG-29K-2002 (and now you probbaly will say that the Su-33 is better, which is true in the strict air to air arena, but the Russians are the only one with naval Flankers yet, and they can't conduct anti-ship missions).

Acording to Bharat-rakshak, India have total of nine Ka-31.

Su-33 may be better than MiG-29K in some fields but it really doesen't matter couse Gorshkov cannot operate the bigger Sukhoi...

IN sea harriers can carry 2 sea eagle anti-ship missiles or 1 sea eagle and 1 external tank to increase its range. Assuming the open waters scenario, PLAN recon helo will be shot down by harriers before they can locate the Viraat battle group. IN sea harriers can attack the SAG from out side its SAM cover.

china has radars that can see a ship ans shoot it with asm without a helo

Surface search radar's range on ships is limited by the horizon. An aircraft can see higher because its horizon is farther.

There has been talk about a PRC CVSG/CVBG. As a pilot I am curious about the aviation compoment of a hypothetical PRC carrier group. What aircraft would make up the airwing of the PLAN carrier forces?

Fighters

Attack Aircraft

ASW Aircraft and or Helos

Electronic Warefare/Tanker/4C

A navalized SU-30 would be a great asset for a carrier. Give it a buddy store and one Flanker could allow other Flankers to operate much further from the CV. The Flanker also carries an excellent array of Anti ships weaponry. Does the Su-30 drop sea mines as well?

Re: Anti-Carrier Trump Card

Well if the carrier is going to be old Varjaakki, its propaply limited to same numbers of Su-33, Ka-28s and Ka-31s as it is onboard Kuznetsov. This couse the takeoff instalations. But in totally chinese ship? who knows, does it have a catapult? If petend that it have, then im still firm believer on behalv of the Su-33 (or similar chinese derivate of the J-11), but maybe adding the Su-33KUB or Su-30MKK as attacker and maybe an even AWACS plane of some type?? I start believe in navalized J-10 only when i see it live in pic that isent PS

Re: Anti-Carrier Trump Card

well, the chinese might not put so much missle equipment in the varyag, and instead make some more room for planes, letting the ship hold around 40.

im putting faith in the su-33kub. its a decent multirole plane. that way, you dont need the j-10s and jh-7's.

i dont think there is two engine j-10 yet.

Question. Besides helos which aircraft that has been suggested for use on the Varyag is in actual production? Does any one know?

Gollevainen. Is that the present air wing of the Kuznetsov? I thought they had Mig-29's? I'm confused. I better check that out.

Does anyone know the present production status of the Mig-29?
