it doeesnt say its only a ranging radar, it says measurement. Unless that is a mistranslation, measurement can mean it does more than merely provide range info. It could also provide location. And then that info could be sent to the missiles. So we're not talking about target illumination nor semi active homing, but we are talking about command guidance. RF guidance is exactly one way of guiding both RAM and fl3000n missiles.

tphuang,

4 targets for a naval search radar is poor- I suspect it can do much better than that.

The radar on top of the mast looks far too small to be a search radar which is why I am wondering whether it is a missile director.

hey as totoro said, it's a targeting radar. I was comparing it something like Tor-M1/2 or Barak missile or HHQ-7 (which it's replacing).

I know that radar looks really small, maybe it's for a smaller ship? It just seems weird to put a missile director so high up.

Which would have to imply that this ship is solely testing a CIWS system. That would make sense as it would mean that each launcher on the ship has its own FCR associated with it making for two entirely separate systems whereas previously I was thinking of a single system. Intriguingly this is a only a very small component of a ship combat system.

Remember this is a test ship, so a high location might serve other testing purposes, like representing the height of a carriers superstructure. Furthermore, having a director/FCR high up offers the same advantages as having a high mounted search radar- a longer radar horizon.

What we might be seeing is the simultaneous testing of two different concepts, a very powerful and large but lower mounted FCR and a lightweight/lower power but high mounted FCR.

That model is a civilian calibration radar, it does not mean the one mounted on 892 is. Though it could be being used as part of the HQ-10 trials as a measuring radar.

...at the time the former Varyag launches, there will be no Type 052D to escort her. But there will be 3-4 Type 052Cs.

One day what you say will most likely be true, but it will be a few years before there are more Ds than Cs.

Type 052C? Eww, I would place my bets on the Type 052D as a mass production ship.

052C's a great ship... and we won't see 052D in service for a good five years at the minimum if the 2012 construction date is correct.
