Washington Post said:
MOSCOW — Ukraine accused Russia on Wednesday of massing troops near the border between the two countries and demanded that Moscow stop its “unacceptable military intervention” ahead of what Kiev calls an illegal referendum in Crimea on joining the Russian Federation.

Russia denied that it its massing forces or intends to invade the former Soviet republic on its southwestern border.

Andriy Parubiy, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, told reporters in Kiev that Russia has deployed more than 80,000 troops, up to 270 tanks and 140 combat planes close to the border, creating the “threat of a full-scale invasion from various directions,” the Associated Press reported.

Parubiy said some Russian troops are as close as a two- or three-hour drive from the Ukrainian capital.

In Moscow, Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov denied that any military buildup was underway on Russia’s nearly 1,250-mile border with Ukraine.

The purported buildup came as interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk visited Washington on Wednesday to meet President Obama and enlist U.S. support in Ukraine’s standoff with Russia.

Obama warned Russia that the United States and its allies “will be forced to apply a cost” if Moscow does not end its incursion into Ukraine’s Crimea region and annexes the territory.

Calling Russia’s incursion into Crimea a violation of international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine, Obama said the United States “will stand with Ukraine in ensuring that that territorial integrity and sovereignty is maintained.”

With Yatsenyuk seated alongside him in the Oval Office, Obama said: “We will continue to say to the Russian government that if it continues on the path that it is on, then not only the United States but the international community . . . will be forced to apply a cost to Russia’s violations of international law and its encroachments on Ukraine. There’s another path available, and we hope that President [Vladimir] Putin is willing to seize that path.”

That sounds ominous, and if the Russians invade, the Ukrainians will fight. NATO better start staging assets in Poland. Time to warm up V Corps (the heavies)?
With what. Didn't a member of the regime say they only had 6000 well trained and organized men? A NATO invasion as in Kosovo can hardly be considered practical.

I agree unfortunately, Nato is not ready for a war. It would take weeks to rally the European Calvary to charge to the Ukrainian rescue and in that time the Russians would have fortified the positions and called up the whole of the Red Army.
And once Mighty Nato hit the Russian wall what could they do? They have the command and tech but the European military is like a outcast child. They love what they do and take it seriously but there parents are disturbed by them so they keep them on a short leash and limited them severely. A good chunk of there abilities are tied down in the Central African republic, Afghanistan and what is left are mostly reserves with little to actually go boom.
The American military is also not ready for anything more then a short scuffle. Most of the Bulk of American forces are in the Reactionary pivot to Asia or Afghanistan. The remaining American military are at home but the Obama administration has more or less shackled them to there bases with budget cuts.
the Red Army is not ready for a real war.with the west either. They could take the Ukraine no doubt but if the full cavalry came in Putin would have to go big. That means not just the Red Army, that means the Strategic Rocket Corps.
Putin has to be stopped but not at that high a cost. His aim is likely a repeat of Georgia, hurt Kiev take the heart of Eastern and southern Ukraine all in a conflict that lasts no more then a month. Like Georgia he expects little to come from the west as its already divided. Germany is in his pocket. The UK is putting away its weapons and has a high Russian population that would cause any action to be debated and unpopular. France is in the CAR and fighting in its own political scandals. Obama is essential spineless he will weasel out and delay, even better he might try and push something in the UN security council where Russia is virtually guarantied two Veto's his and China's who traditionally backs the Russian. The last thing Obama can do is what is being talked about right now sanctions. And that's a light slap on the wrist.

Russia has sent troops to Ukraine's Crimea region to protect against any "armed aggression" by Ukrainian forces during a referendum to decide the region's future, a senior Russian lawmaker has claimed.

Seems logical!

...by Russian standards...

Let's not start World War III for the sake of preserving all parts of the fruits of one marginal regime change.

Why would Putin try to occupy the Ukraine? Much better to watch while the EU tries to keep it afloat.

Because an EU that is struggling to keep Ukraine afloat would be happy to offload some of that responsibility to the US, and the US would be happy to use that opportunity to lodge a good claim for permission to put NATO military installations, up to and incluing BMD, on Ukrainian soil.

The first six USAF F-16s (out of total 12, with about 300 ground crew, coming) landed this afternoon in Poland (I just saw the video, but can't link it); at the base in Łask:

The same Polish server which showed the F-16s landing also claimed six Russian Su-27s this afternoon landed in Babruysk, Belarus:
