PLAN Type 051B/C Class Destroyers

Re: DDG 051C Thread

When 112 and 113 went in for their mid-life update, they were about 15 years old.

167 will turn 15 in 2014, so it is not too difficult to forecast when the MLU is due.

to be fair, it already had one in 2004. Although nothing as significant as what 052s went through. As much as I'd like to them putting HQ-10 SAM on it, it's probably more likely they will keep HQ-7 and do an upgrade similar to that of 052s.

China Defense Blog shows a pic of 167 with all weapons and sensors removed. And a lot of scaffolding. So perhaps we can expect a FL-3000N and 730? 130mm gun?

Re: DDG 051C Thread

May I suggest we change this thread's title to "PLAN Type 051B & 051C Class Destroyer" ?

IMO the chance of a VLS installation for the refit is extremely low. We'd be lucky if they install the HQ-10.

Yes, thanks for posting it. I don't think they will do anything extreme but just for the sake of discussion, wonder if it's feasible and beneficial to convert the hangar with a VLS system? Not sure if they can squeeze in a 8 cell VLS and make the hangar into a single helo hangar.

Given the 051B DDG design is only a small improvement from the 052 Luhu class design, it's more likely to sport the same improvement package as with the 052 Luhu class's most recent upgrades. And unless provisions have been made back then, installing VLS may require to cut into a few decks of the hull to make room for it - since the 051B design is largely experimental in nature (compare to other hull designs, it only has one ship), not that likely they'd give it any radical makeover.

Based on previous experience with other PLAN upgrades, I don't expect anything dramatic.

No HQ-7 carrying vessel has had its SAMs upgraded to a superior model, not even for the original 054's which are begging for it.

The most we are likely to see are electronic/radar upgrades and the installation of Type 730 CIWS.

The PLAN seem very generous in installing these guns.

I expect some upgrade to the main gun but am not holding my breath.

The PLAN would rather build new vessels directly than try to radically upgrade these older vessels.

Having said that, what is intriguing me in that picture is the Luda beside her.

I thought that the PLAN has pretty much retired almost if not all of the Luda-class.

Why have they decided to upgrade this particular model.

165 and 166 are the latest 051's and have had several upgrades, such as the 100 twin turrets instead of 130 mm. They still have 10 years left in them.

When 112 and 113 underwent a refit, were their HQ-7s removed during that process? I don't recall.

I don't think the 054s have undergone mid-life refit yet.

The Chinese military has made improved variants of the HQ-7 system and missiles, so logically I'd think that the HQ-7 on Chinese Navy ships may also receive such upgrades during refit. The French, for example, has updated the system with VT-1 and Mk.3 variants.

The HQ-10 has some obvious improvements, such as ability to mount up to 24 rounds on the launcher. But as far as the missile itself is concerned, how does it match up to improved HQ-7 variants in intercepting missile threats?
