Singapore Airshow 2014: AVIC offering L-15 as AJT alternative

Jon Grevatt, Singapore - IHS Jane's Defence Industry

11 February 2014

The China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC) is offering the HAIC L-15 advanced jet trainer (AJT) to Asian countries as a cost-effective alternative to more expensive but similarly capable AJT competitors, a senior CATIC official told IHS Jane's on 11 February at the Singapore Airshow.

The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that CATIC - the export arm of the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) - was pursuing export opportunities for the L-15 AJT in Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.

He also confirmed that the first customer of the L-15 is Zambia, which ordered six aircraft in late 2012 to augment the Zambian Air Force's operation of 16 HAIC K-8 Karakoram intermediate jet trainers procured in two batches over the past decade.

That is awesome news! I look forward to witnessing AVIC secure more orders for the L-15 AJT.

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

Ivchenko-Progress AI-222 are new and unproven engines . Theoretically , two of them should be about equal to RD-93 , but those are paper specifications and RD-93 is well known and tested engine . Also , L-15 currently has no provision for radar and has less space for additional avionics and fuel (therefore less range) .

Overall , I don't say something could not be done to turn L-15 in real light fighter , but for now it is just a trainer and light attack aircraft .

You are correct. It many never be a fighter aircraft, but it has the possibility of becoming a Chinese version of the AT-50 and compete in the lucrative attack trainer market.

Isn’t the AI-222 engine already in use with the Yak-130 and the L15 and other aircraft?

Re: JL-15 and other trainers

How do you see the situation in Ukraine affective AI-222 production and parts supply? Has a co-production license been obtained by the 608 Institute for the AI-222?

L7 completes static testing

... but when will if finally fly ??? :( Is it really that difficult to develop a prop-driven trainer ???

Some very nice pics. I have always felt that this particular trainer would have a very bright future.

In addition to the potential export market, IMHO, having a Chinese Air Force and a naval varaint would make a lot of sense for the PLAAF and PLAN.
