Philippines to Get Israel's Excess Defense Equipment

MANILA, Philippines - Israel has offered to provide excess defense articles to the Philippines, widely regarded as one of the weakest in the region in terms of military capability.Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin and Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon discussed the matter during a bilateral meeting in Tel Aviv, Israel last week.“Israel also offered assistance in the development of command, control, communications, computers and intelligence capabilities as well as the availability of excess defense articles for Philippine acquisition,” Defense department spokesman Peter Galvez said in a statement released Wednesday.Galvez did not say what equipment would be provided by the Israeli government to the Philippines.Gazmin and Ya’alon also discussed the prospects of information exchange, particularly on terrorism and technology-sharing between their countries.Earlier, The STAR reported that the Philippines would acquire three air search radars from Israel to boost its monitoring activities in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

most of the weapons hard points are seen on other versions of the AW109 and units used in other nations. about the only part I question are the secondary weapons stubs and the sensor mounted over the cockpit.

A point of clarification. The 2 KKOs (Indonesian Marines) were NOT IN UNIFORM when they infiltrated into Singapore and planted bombs in MacDonald House on 10 March 1965. The explosions killed 2 women bank employees and injured about 30 others. These 2 saboteurs were caught, tried and found guilty and hanged. Our Defence Minister, the late Dr Goh Keng Swee then made it very clear to Brig-Gen (later Gen) Tjokropranolo, the representative of Acting President Suharto of Indonesia that the 2 could not be tried as uniformed military personnel as they were in civilian clothes when they infiltrated into Singapore and did the dastardly act. They were therefore NOT covered by the Geneva Convention as uniformed soldiers performing a military operation. It's all water under the bridge now, and as members of ASEAN we should not antagonise each other in any way. We cannot change history, but should accept it without hard feelings as in the case of the US and Vietnam (Vietnam War), Malaysia and Indonesia (Confrontation 1963-1966) et al.

PN to Beef Up Replenishment at Sea Capability





MANILA, Feb. 6 (PNA) -- The Philippine Navy is beefing up its "replenishment at sea" (RAS) with the arrival of three medium-sized tanker ships.The ships will be coming from the Philippine National Oil Corporation as the agency is acquiring new tanker ships to boost its fuel-carrying capacity.The vessels are arriving in May in time with the PN's 116th founding anniversary on the 21st of that month.A PN official said with the arrival of these assets, the on station capabilities of the Navy's two Gregorio Del Pilar frigates, Jacinto class patrol vessel ships and various fast gun boats will be greatly increased as the tankers can meet and refuel these naval craft in the high seas. Ukrainian T-84 Oplot M MBT have arrived in Thailand. It is reported that the Royal Thai Army ordered up 49 T-84 MBT with the cost over 200 millions in September 2011. (Didn't we have report that the Thai Army planned to purchase Chinese T-96? Where have the deal gone?)

Philippines to Acquire Maritime Surveillance Radars from Israel

The Philippine Department of National Defence (DND) is reported to be acquiring three radars from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for PHP2.6 billion (USD57 million) to boost its maritime surveillance capabilities.Philippine newspaper reports on 5 February quoted an unnamed Philippines source as saying that the radars are expected to be delivered within the next two years and that IAI will provide an additional single unit, as a loan system, within a year. Reports suggested also that, while the full national coverage requirement mandated nine radars in principle, the capability of the three radars to be provided reduced this overall requirement to seven.

A DND official confirmed to IHS Jane's on 5 February that surveillance and threat alert radars are indeed being acquired for the Philippine Air Force (PAF), to safeguard national maritime territories. However the official did not reveal further details, citing issues of confidentiality.News of the acquisition comes on the back of increased Chinese military presence in disputed waters in the South China Sea. In November 2013 China announced fishing restrictions across an area covering approximately 2 million of the South China Sea's 3.5 million kms , a move which the Philippines has declared it will defy.

US Admiral Assures Philippines of Help in Event of Conflict with China in Disputed Sea

MANILA - The United States will go to the aid of the Philippines in the event of conflict with China over disputed waters in the South China Sea, the commander of the US Navy said on Thursday.The comments by Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations of the US Navy, were the most explicit statement of US support for the ill-equipped Philippine military which is facing a more assertive China in disputed waters."Of course, we would help you," Adm Greenert told students of the National Defence College of the Philippines in response to a question about a hypothetical Chinese occupation of one of the disputed Spratly Islands."I don't know what that help would be specifically. I mean, we have an obligation because we have a treaty. But I don't know in what capacity that help is."China claims about 90 per cent of the South China Sea's 3.5 million sq km waters. The sea provides 10 per cent of the global fisheries catch and carries US$5 trillion (S$6.32 trillion) in ship-borne trade each year.

Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam also claim parts of the sea.The Philippines has taken its dispute with China to arbitration under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea but China is refusing to participate in the case.China has rejected challenges to its sovereignty claims, and accused the Philippines of illegally occupying Chinese islands in the seas and of provoking tension there.Adm Greenert said the United States supported the Philippines' case and opposed China's aggressive behaviour and would work with allies to maintain freedom of navigation.The United States has spoken out against China's assertive moves which have in recent months included the imposition of an air defence identification zone in north-east Asia and new fishing rules in South China Sea."I think you may have seen some statements coming from our policy-makers exactly in that direction, you will see more of that from us," he said, adding he believed China wanted to be clear on where the United States stood.Adm Greenert said the United States was deploying more ships in the region as it rebalanced foreign policy towards Asia and the United States hoped to deploy 60 ships in the Western Pacific from about 45 to 50 now.
