Awesome picture of a real J-16 powered by WS-10A engine armed to the teeth !!!

The picture showed J-16 carrying as many as thirty 500-pound laser guided bombs plus two PL-8 air to air missiles !!!

There is a supplementary point about Russian designations where Sukhoi's are SU and Migs are Mig, but it just occurs to me that I only know these from Western sources and so not entirely sure is these are the precise designations used by the Russians themselves?

To put your mind at ease, Su and MiG are the original Russian designations, derived from the names of the chief designers of the design bureaus. NATO coined nicknames like FLANKER or FULCRUM because the exact designations were not always known.

exactly.. the Sukhoi Design bureau was named after one of the original designers Pavel Sukhoi. MiG or RSK MIG was named after the company's founders Artem Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich.

.. and slightly OT AK (the gun designation) was named after it's inventor Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov who actually just died a couple weeks ago. the A stood for Автомат which is Russian spelling for automatic. Automatic Kalashnikov or avtomát Kalášnikova in Cyrilic.

If the same design change to a flanker, when implemented by the Russians, would not have caused external observer to give it a different name, then the design change, just because it was done by the Chinese, should not result in a different name either.

Flanker is a NATO name, and as an external observer, NATO had demand very drastic changes before according Russian designs a new name. Look at the Su-7/17/22 fitter family, or the mig-23/27 flogger family.

the level of change also effects the codename. For example the first Su27 prototype is considered Flanker-A well the production units of that first generation are Flanker-B the Su33 is Flanker-D well Su35 is Flanker-E the alphabetical modifier is attached specifically to indicate a specific model based on known features.

Just like the pink chain we seen on Liaoning. :D

Still a chain.

There's a reason for that pink chain on Liaoning. The paint changes color with temperature. Pink is 'safe' with the highest integrity, and I believe anything beyond brown is 'unsafe' for tying down a 40,000 lb plane to the deck.

Any chance the green areas are composites? I've seen an Eurofighter Typhoon documentary, and its all composite wings too are green.

Hey guys, look at the 1/72 scale model I just picked up... brand new in my hot hands! Normally $49.99, but I picked it up for $34 at a local Hobby Town store.

I am really looking forward to building it. I had a Russian SU-33 that I was going to use to make a J-15, but now I will just use this.

Over the next year, in between my

, I intend to build all of my Chinese aircraft in 1/72 scale. Here's what I have:

The 1/72 scale aircraft I have (shown above) are:

- H-6 which I will build as the new H-6K
- JH-7 which I will build as a JH-7A
- J-10S which I will build as a fully functional combat aircraft
- Z-10 attack helo,
- J-11B
- J-15
- J-20

That should be a pretty nice representation of modern Chinese aircraft.
