phoenix news reports that an Iceland businessman will charter a Chinese aircraft to take snowden to Iceland if that govt offers him asylum, which they are working on. it was a telephone interview of that guy so it's pretty reliable. for the time being snowden is safe in hongkong. if he had went to any other place in asia like Taiwan, Singapore, s.korea or japan he would have been arrested and sent back to the USA in a matter of hours after his exposure. there is a Chinese foreign ministry office in hongkong and i'm sure they must have had a conversation with the American consul general telling him politely to NOT to try and send in the delta force, seal team 6 or Jason bourne to grab and bag snowden! hong kong is Chinese territory and stunts like that will not be CONSTRUCTIVE to good sino-US relations.

The paper said Snowden had also passed on information detailing NSA attacks on China's prestigious Tsinghua University, the hub of a major digital network from which data on millions of Chinese citizens could be harvested.
As Snowden made his latest disclosures, the US issued an extradition request to Hong Kong and piled pressure on the territory to respond swiftly. "If Hong Kong doesn't act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong's commitment to the rule of law," a senior Obama administration official said.

And CY Leung will let the court judges take their positions on the firing line, or in the line of fire depending on your opinion...still, this is no longer something that HK can handle it independently. Everyone knows if and when the battleground switch to the court room this whole thing will drag on for years before the US can grill his arse down at Gitmo, what the US really wants right now is to silence Snowden, that is, make him no longer have access to media to leak anymore stuff. Once that achieved, the media war will once again one-sided to US favor. Having Snowden under arrest for the court proceedings will make that a reality - for one, he would no longer have access to the internet.

In any event, though, even if HK government don't actively pursue him (latest report that he's now living in a government safe house, though still principally a free man), his visitor visa only good for 90 days, plus now the US finally press charges on him, Snowden has nowhere to go (Iceland lost its spine as we already know) and if he keep staying in HK he'll still get arrested by August, by then he'll be violating immigration law.

Re: World News Thread & Breaking News!!

Not at all surprising that Russia offers asylum to Snowden, a BIG catch. It is expected that other interested parties/countries, especially Russia's friends/allies would also be very interested in obtaining US Military & National Secrets. A very painful lesson for the NSA and their other security agencies - "the enemy within is more dangerous than external adversaries". Snowden can classified as a Traitor to his country, but unfortunately, he is called a hero by some naive social activists. If this act was done in autocratic countries, the person concerned and his family would be out in a clanger, and their security personnel will go all out to get the "whistle-blower" of their countries' secrets.

Or Snowden could walk into a Russian Embassy (Consulate General actually) in Hong Kong and seek asylum there. Here comes a third player. Ya think he will try it?

Russia would consider granting asylum to the American who has exposed top-secret U.S. surveillance programs, if he were to ask for it, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said on Tuesday.

Latest news reported that Elvis had just left Hong Kong. I wonder how authentic this release is. Is it true he's gone, or a way to protect him by saying he's gone so that the US can't pressure HK in the meantime. Even more sinister, perhaps it's an "official story" released to the public while he finishes his documents and apply for asylum and what not.

Anyhow I'm sleepy from my lunch. Wanna doze off lol

The latest news is that he did left HK, and guess what, aboard an Aeroflot flight to Moscow. Well we all need to wait at least 12 more hours before we know why he at the end did something that'd give his critics' claim the ironclad prove…

But for everyone in HK and perhaps China as well, they can all tell Uncle Sam that this is no longer their problem anymore…now US have to face Putin the strong man of Russia.

so elvis has just left the building! well i'm proud that hongkong didn't hand him back to the US. this proves they aren't lapdogs like the rest of asia and we can thank the Chinese foreign ministry for that. HONG KONG WAS THE ONLY SAFE PLACE FOR HIM TO STAY IN ASIA despite the bullying from the US state dept. now lets see putin having some fun.

"Meanwhile, the HKSAR Government has formally written to the US Government requesting clarification on earlier reports about the hacking of computer systems in Hong Kong by US government agencies. The HKSAR Government will continue to follow up on the matter so as to protect the legal rights of the people of Hong Kong."

Well done the HKSAR Gov. for not kowtowing to the US Gov.
