MANILA, Philippines - (UPDATE - 12:03 p.m.) The Philippine Coast Guard on Friday admitted responsibility for the death of a Taiwanese fisherman off the coast of Batanes the day before, but said its personnel acted in self-defense when the foreign fishing vessel attempted to ram one of its ships.....

MANILA - The Philippine Coast Guard confirmed Friday that a Taiwanese fisherman was killed after the PCG shot at a fishing trawler that tried to ram their boat near Batanes.

Isorena said the PCG fired warning shots at the much larger fishing trawler when it tried to ram their vessel. The Coast Guard then shot at the trawler's engine, causing it to stop.

He said the PCG withdrew its vessel after another ship arrived in the area.

The Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said it received a call for aid from the fishing vessel at 1pm yesterday.

The CGA said a 2,000-tonne ship equipped with an automatic cannon and two 50mm machine guns had been dispatched, which arrived at 7pm last night. It was to accompany the Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28 as it waits for a tow back to port today, the CGA added.

Right.....so after the Taiwanese fishing vessel was disabled, this Philippine CG ship no longer decided to board and render assistance? It left after the arrival of another ship? What other ship?????? Taiwan CGA could not get to the scene till 6 hours after the call for help.

I think after firing at our fishing boat and killing one of our fisherman, the cowardly philippine captain ran away, according to our news media.

The question is if true the assaulting vessel ran away from the scene, what "oh sh**" realization made them say get out of here? It's already bad enough they fired with deadly force upon a fishing vessel. That didn't make them run.

According to the fishermen, the ship not only fired on the fishing boat, but chased them for nearly an hour. The weapon used is likely a machine gun.

Don't sound like warning shots in self defense to me.

Since they are so keen with "international law", I question if one has been broken today, the duty to render assistance on the high seas. Disabling a boat and then taking off.....that's just what pirates and bandits do, not professional coast guards. I would love to find out exact coordinates to see this more clearly on a map. The report states 164 miles southeast of southern tip of Taiwan. I want to see if its more east than south. Also want to know the vessel stats of BFAR MCS 3001.

So an article points out per the Filipinos incident took place 43 nautical miles east of Balintang Islands, clearly beyond the 12 mile territorial sea and about equidistant between Taiwan and Luzon. That's pretty much in the Western Pacific. Also, the PCG vessel is 100 ft long. A pic of Kuang Ta Hsing No. 28 shows it no where being 100 ft long, clearly not a match if supposedly on ramming course. No EEZ argument justifies shooting and taking off, full stop.

All sounds like the Filipinos botched it again...well, not surprising because they got a natural tendency to turn any supposedly textbook scenario into bona fide disasters.

Interesting statement. May I know what did the Philippine Coast Guard 'botched' this time???

Well first you don't just shoot at the fishing boat and call it "warning shots fired"; next if this happens in Philippine's waters as claimed they should've boarded the boat and tow it back to base, arrest the fishermen and impound the boat....instead, they shot up the boat and left a fisherman bled to death, no aid rendered or act of law enforcement carried out; instead of towing the boat back and impound it they left the boat on its own devices - if the PCG shot at the boat in the attempt to incapacitate it then there should be more follow-up actions instead of doing it half-arsed.

MANILA - Malacañang described as an “aggressive act” the attempt of a reported Taiwanese vessel to ram into a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessel that prompted the Philippine Coast Guard personnel to fire at the vessel seen near Batanes.

“It was an aggressive act. The ramming of the boat into our vessel was certainly an aggressive act. So the PCG responded accordingly. Nag-warning shot sila, hindi po tumigil. They took the other necessary action and I understand eventually disengaged after that. So let’s see kung ano pa ho ang mailalabas ng investigation ng PCG,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said. Valte however stressed that she is citing an initial report of the PCG and that the government will have to wait for the results of the investigation before making a comment on reports that Taiwan is asking for an apology.

“I reiterate that the information that I shared with you is part of the initial report that was given by the PCG and the BFAR. May inorder na po si Commandant (Rodolfo) Isorena na investigation on the matter. Tingnan po natin kung ano pa ‘yung further details na mailalabas ‘nung investigation,” she said. Citing the initial report of the PCG, Valte said the PCG personnel had tried to board the vessels after detecting them “in archipelagic waters.” The PCG fired a warning shot when one the foreign vessels was about to ram the BFAR vessel.
