Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

China's GDP for 2012 is more than 4 times larger than that of India's 8250 billion $ vs 1947 billion $. But what i like to know is what is the status of India's industries. China's current naval expantion for instance is made possible by a competitive ship building industry and a formidable electronics industry. Does India have a similar track record in building these kinds of industries ? Albeit from a lower bases, but i mean do you guys see India going down the same path as China in these area's ? If so they could close in on China. Don't forget that the Americans has been quite dismissive about China's capabilities for a long time, so China should not repeat the same mistakes and underestimate India.

When talking about military might, it's best to use GDP (PPP). One dollar in India buys much more than one dollar in the US or China. When adjusted for PPP, the GDP's for China and India are 12382 billion USD and 4710 billion USD respectively which translates to only 3 times bigger rather than 4 times. Not TOO much of a difference, but still, details are also important.

India seemed to have tried to forgo secondary manufacturing and jump straight to a tertiary services based economy. And that shows in the poor basic infrastructure in India and the tiny heavy manufacturing output of the country.

In terms of shipbuilding, in 2008, the top 5 were

1. South Korea - 37.45%
2. China - 33.7%
3. Japan - 17.3
4. Philippines - 1.6%
5. Vietnam - 1.2%

The rest of the world makes up the remaining 9.75% of total global shipping tonnage produced.

There is not a direct relationship between commercial shipping output and naval might as many of the world's top naval countries are not on that list.

When we are talking about military might, one should instead focus on weapons, and in that regard, India and China are not even in the same league.

China makes pretty much all its weapons indigenously for all their services, and the quality of Chinese weapons have improved rapidly over recent years.

Contrast that to the Indians, and its almost an inversion of domestic and imported weapons mix whereby the Indians make about as much of their weapons as China imports, and India imports as much of its weapons as China makes for itself.

American dismissal of China seems to be based largely on American insularity and a strong racist undercurrent against China and all things Chinese. Chinese dismissal of India as a real peer competitor is borne much more out of a cold appraisal of facts and figures.

If and when India gets its act together and manages to grow its economy faster than China, develops a world class commerical heavy manufacuting and electronics industry and starts making top quality high tech weapons by itself and builds up a comprehensive national military industrial complex, China will take them more seriously. But at present, even though the Indian military looks good on paper, pretty much everything remotely impressive about it is bought from abroad. In a real fight, the Indians are going to have massive logistical and attrition replacement problems, and that fundamental weakness alone will loose them any major war they might fight against a top world military power and makes the Indian military tiger a paper one.

Irrelevant when India is paying for all of its advanced weapons systems in US$ rather than Rupees. That's just one of the lessor the downside to importing weapons instead of making them yourself.

In addition, when talking about the economy, economic growth is just as, if not more important than nominal GDP for any given year, and things look worse for India if you consider economic growth, because not only is India's economy a fraction of China's, China's economy is growing much faster, so in relative terms, India's GDP is going to become a smaller and smaller fraction of China's as the years pass if current trends continue.

Nope, plain wrong here.
India purchase most of modern equipment from other countries (so, it counts nominal GDP), while China produce most of modern equipment domestically (so, it counts PPP).

Considering the above facts, it's obvious, China military even better than 4x India.

Now, if the Russia, France, the US, etc (somehow, in the future) stop supporting India, what would happen with the modern weapons India have now ? .... remember Shah Iran vs Khomeini ? ;)

India is atleast 40 years behind China (according to economist magazine), and China is extending the lead over India. India is more media hype than actual capability, China is the real deal, that's why the west is so scared of China. In Chinese media, India doesn't even get mentioned. China only compares itself against the US.

Why are we discussing Indian military on a PLAN submarine thread anyway?
I would love to continue the China vs India comparison but maybe on another thread.

Rear admiral Yin Zhuo also briefly mentioned it as well. It is rumored to have a Mach 5 speed, 500 km range with cruise. It will be installed on both the VLS of the Type 052D and any future destroyers.

Just because another is behind you doesn't mean you should feel the urge to emphasise their inferiority. You seem to be disturbingly overenthusiastic in bashing India. Looking down on someone is the first step towards hubris, it would be foolish to underestimate a 1.2 billion population country, regardless of its economic prowess.

Ok, let's compare track records then. How good is Arjun? Tejas? MCA? Even the Indian themselves don't want them

How the hell should I know how good they are? My point was not India is better than what many think, my point was for him to not so enthusiastically bash India for the sake of bashing India. Does it please you to be able to bash another country for being less advanced than you? Are you that immature? Is it necessary for you to emphasise your superiority to satisfy your ego? It's time to learn some humility and modesty.
