This is my first post in the forum.
I have been a long time viewer here.
One question have brothered me recently;
Helicopters are integral part of many functions of modern navy.
For example, they are ideal for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, search and rescue,
ship to shore assault, and even used as early warning aircraft.

Furthermore, I can see the potential need for 100s of them.
20 for destroyers, 30 for frigates, 15-20 per aircraft carrier.
20 or so far 071 LPD, and 40-60 or so other smaller landing crafts design for taiwan conflict.
And that does not include smaller type 056 or future(?) LHD.
To me it seems that new helicopter near NH-90 in performance is just as important to PLA as J10.

Why have the development of helicopter fallen so far hehind their fixed-wing counterpart.
Even on defense forum, there are little enthusiasm about them.

I dont think that is the case at all

China has done what it could with what it had available to it, the Z9 is the most widely used helicopter and in probably the most types of rolls too

AC313 a 13-ton helicopter from design and set up in a matter of years after the 2008 earthquake just shows how fast China can do things

yes there is a shortfall of helos for the Navy but that is something that is being addressed as we speak, once helos like Z15 start coming through the shortfall will be addressed

if China wants they could quite easily ramp of Z9 and Z8 helo production, but what would be the point if in the coming years they will need replacing anyway with more advanced helos

China had

2 x Ka-28PL delivered in 1997
5 x Ka-28PL in 1999
3 x Ka-28PS SAR version in 1999
9 x Ka-28PL in 2010

total Ka-28 = 19

and plus 9 x Ka-31 in 2011

plus they have

33 x Z8 helos and 23 x Z9 helicopters

so in total around 84 helicopters for the Navy maybe few less due to crashes of Ka-28/Ka-31

which actually isnt that bad but still a shortfall, with the number of surface ships rising more will be added

and Franco-Russe feel free to correct any numbers!

Small number of helicopters serving in China Navy is more or less co-related to the number of frigates and destroyers with helicopter deck, though not on a one to one basis. Z-9C and Ka-28 are basically used for anti-submarine warfare, while Z-8 is for transport role or beach assault for the marines.

No question that the number of Z-8 is too small for Chinese marines which is estimated at 12,000 personnel, but with only two 071 LPD launched, there is not much helicopters they can carry. If China decided to build helicopter carriers or through deck LHA then we might see increase in transport helicopters in navy service.
