Maybe this camo is designed for northern China winter operation, or (wild guess) day time marine / amphibious assult?
it will still stand out in winter/snow conditions, the contrast is bad
perhaps more suitable for mountains, but not good in any way, this habit of being cheap needs to go
being cheap for being cost sensible is good, but being cheap just for the sake of being cheap is bad
Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but, its one I've pondered for awhile.
On both the type 96 & 99, what would be the feasibility of temporarily replacing the stowage baskets with more substantial laminate modules of a similar (if not identical) configuration to those employed on the turret front?
I realize there would be a greater weight penalty than ERA. But, its already been mentioned that ERA has to be properly angled and have enough passive armour behind to get the optimun protection.

Fair point, and in any real conflict scenario, all tanks and armored vehicles would actually be re-painted in the camo scene of the terrain they will be fighting over just before being deployed.
However, having said that, I am scratching my head trying to picture an environment that those tanks would not stick out like a sore thumb in...

To be fair, the size of a MBT makes it stands out already, it ain't like we got some crazy tech in Red Alert 2, y'know...
Still, they should use some other camo pattern / color that makes them not as obvious as such.

Well, having said that, something that always stuck with me was during the Russia-Georgia war, there was a news clip where a female reporter was giving a report, and half way through, a bit of a hill behind her suddenly jerked into life and drove away. Turns out there was a Russian BMP dug in behind her the whole time. I was only half watch at the time, but I never had a clue that there was an IFV there until it moved. And in all honesty, I probably wouldn't have noticed even if I was fully paying attention.
I had a quick search but failed to find the clip on the interwebs, so you will just have to take my word for if, unless you or some helpful person can turn up the clip I am referring to.
But point is, in this day and age, when camo can be so effective, there is really little excuse for Chinese tanks to be sporting ones that are so...'loud'.

Military camouflage, in that sense, only has a limited use nowadays. Unless you can hide it's heat signature, it's bound to be detected by any military fielding modern equipment. However, if you're in a rather low tech war, camo like that is still worth the effort.
