It seems to me that, without going into Martian's essay, the DSI bump does contribute to the stealthiness of an air intake. The long intakes with S-bends used in modern fighters decrease the static pressure at the face of the engine. This increases the size and fuel consumption needed to achieve the performance needed by the aircraft. J-20 will therefore pay a lower price in air intake efficiency loss. Besides an additional twenty years of study and super-computer development this too will contribute to the efficiency of the engine installation of J-20 compared with F-22.

a well designed intake and inlet is critical to aircraft performance

but the crux lies on the engine, no matter how good the aerodynamic design is, J-20 still need a pair of F119 class engines

I agree, the DSI inlet probably is significant contributor to stealth. The J-20 can take advantage of improved computing as well, both in on-board electronics and also in the design process. However, I wonder if Chengdu even intends it to compete in stealth. I imagine the J-20 is designed to be stronger in other areas. The DAS system it apparently has is quite interesting, for example.

siegecrossbow, I respectfully disagree. The discussion, as I read it, isn't about which plane is better. They are using the F-22 as a reference point in order to make more informed statements about the J-20. The F-22 has been in service longer and there is much more known about its characteristics, so we can learn some about the J-20 by comparing and contrasting a new plane with an existing plane. I really enjoy their technical discussion and would like to read more.

i can also say that despite being in service for so long, there is so little known about the F-22, especially under the skin, beyond the aerodynamic shape and about its LO capabilities, that it is close to pointless to draw comparison from it

the F-35 even enjoyed much more exposure than the F-22 despite being much newer

there is no problem drawing comparison from well established facts for an informative discussion, but the problem with these arguments is simply because they are inaccurate and distorted

and we probably know even less about the J-20 itself :)

Re: Good day

Due to the incessant complaints to my 2 posts on the J-20, which are the only ones that I have made in the last few months, I will take another long vacation and let you chat among yourselves. It is ridiculous how much you guys complain at my few posts.

Dude , I feel your "pain" .

Sometimes , one gets the impression that only certain nations are about to produce truly advanced "alien" like fighters that cannot be detected, and cannot be shot down.

If China were to develope a new generation fighther , it gets scrutinized and diagnosed under the most powerful microscope in the galaxy . Every assumption, opinion , value, and fact gets challenged .

This limits the quality ,extent & depth of discussion on this forum .

What a pity . :(

I somewhat doubt that, given we saw quite a few pictures of the paint or whatever it was chipped off, and that we haven't seen any pictures of the same pictures without the chipping if it was PS.

Besides who would be so daft to PS that bit of paint off :p
