Not as high as you would think. The external part of the nozzle don't experience the same kind of temperature as what goes on inside.

Look at it closely AGAIN. It is obvious that the external petals, which are painted black, don't match with the nozzle petals!

As for big shrimps... MAYA is one of the top "engine experts" from FY and CD. He concluded that the engines were AL-31 a few weeks back. He also said the same thing on this forum. Big enough of a shrimp for you?

The external set of petals could be the heat resistant type (possibly ceramic?) making it cool enough to be painted on. About the engine, it does have the same blue afterburner like the AL-31. It's possible the engine is a version of the AL-31, upgraded and improved with a few new components like what we've heard about in the article talking about the progress made in the maintenance of the engine.

The plane is simply huge. Did you see how smAll the guy standing on top of the plane?
Or the dude is comparably tiny. I feel like a giant when I'm in China, especially when I'm in the interior.

Another thing to note. The J-20 looks bigger in part because of the taller landing gears in proportion to its fuselage height.

Com'on dude. Would a couple inches make that much of a difference from the distance? I'm tired of people making comments on how short Chinese are. The average height of Chinese may be a couple inches shorter than Westerners, but they are not midgets. Unless an extremely tall Westerner stands next to an extremely short Chinese, you simply cannot tell the difference from that distance. Here is a photo of F-15 with its pilot standing next to it.

You should also keep in mind that roughly speaking the average height for people above a certain age is shorter than below for historical demographic reasons, and there is also noticeable geographic difference. I feel pathetically average height wise when I'm in Tianjin, but magnificently tall in Shanghai (barring Yao Ming). Whether these differences really translate to significant differences in a picture or not is ambiguous, but I did say the landing gear height was an important factor :p

EDIT: Looking this stuff up again, there is a 3 inch difference in average height between urban China and the US, but a 5 inch difference in average height between rural China and the US. That's only about a 7% difference so it probably doesn't translate to significant differences in a long distance photo.

However, perception wise it's pretty big :p. If you spent some of your pre-adult life in the states and you're tired of the short China man stereotype, you should note that overseas Chinese have up until recently the benefit of a much better growing environment. Just because it's not true regarding Chinese Americans does not necessarily make it untrue for China :p
