TEL of Tor, missing the upper half.

Thanks.

I am illiteracy on English abbreviation, I got TEL is Transportable Erection Launcher; what is "Tor"?

Good timing, may I suggest to you good folks at SDF, that, the reason SDF remains a samll circle ("small circle" is never a good thing), is because SDF do not intent to explain whatever abbreviations flying around this forum. Last time I heard, this forum welcomes members from whichever country / origin, right? Then why so sure everyone knows the english abbreviation?

Oh, Thanks.

But it was not this single case I was refering to, I was refering to the forum culture.

AAA could be Anti-Aircraft-Artillery, it also can be this much:

Agricultural Adjustment Act 农业调整法[美];
Agricultural Adjustment Administration 农业调整管理局;
Amateur Athletic Association 业余体育协会[美];
American Anthropological Association 美国人类学协会;
American Arbitration Association 美国仲裁协会;
American Automobile Association 美国汽车协会;

All I want to say, is that if we feel OK that no SMS style spelling is allowed at this good forum, we really can make a little bit more efforts to type the full spelling (at least once every post) of certain military related abbreviation. Makes everyone more confortable to read any post in any length.

I don't know man...This is a defense forum, so military jargons and abbreviations are expected. If you're gonna come in here, it's pretty much given that either you knew enough beforehand, or you learn while you're staying. The people here are at least mature enough not to mock that, and instead, would be more than happy to answer your inquiry. All it really takes is for you to ask.

What does "TEL of Tor" means ?

T.E.L. - Transporter-Erector-Launcher....

An All-purpose vehicle that not only carries the missile system around but can raise into the launch position and launch it at the target on short notice.

Usually carries the launch crew on board.

With the older liquid-fueled missiles it would have accompanying fueling trucks, and the missile would have to be fuel just prior to launch - a lengthy and dangerous operation, during which the whole system and crew were very vulnerable to attack.

When storable liquid propellants and solid propellants were developed, there was no longer a need for the fuel trucks, greatly enhancing response time, concealment and system survivability.

Good examples are the Chinese copies of Soviet-era launchers for the DF-15, DF-21 (based on the MAZ transporter truck) and the indigenous DF-31/A missile launchers that parade during major PRC anniversaries.

In addition to ballistic missile systems (SSM's) TELs are also used for Surface-to-Air Missile systems (SAMs) like the Tor you mentioned.

The smaller, short-ranged SAM TELs usually have tracking and engagement radars (as well as electro-optical or IR systems) on board - to control the engagement, and sometimes also the search radars attached - like the Tor/Tor M1.

Larger SAMs like the S200 have specialized search, track and engagement radars mounted on separate vehicles.

Agreed. A lot of times, I would do a simply google search when I see something, abbreviation and many other things, that I don't know about. Many time, I found a lot more information that is related to that stuff that I was originally searching for, but was not originally intended to be searched for. So I end up learning a lot more than I have originally planned. this is part of why I go to these forums.
