I'm thinking to practice writing I'm going to write a story where US Marines intervene in a Alien Civil War (in exchange for FTL technology, Dark Elves IN SPACE!) and interested in getting the details "right" and other little things for realism.

This thread will also serve as back and forth for debating the logistics, tactics and strategy for how we would think realistically an interstellar war would be fought.

Assume the following to be true:

1- FTL is 'relatively' cheap and inexpensive so that merchant charter companies can exist without significant government subsidy in parallel with official government services.

2- Assuming FTL works "system to system" but less well "planet to planet" due to gravity wells (setting down rules ahead of time).

3- Assuming No Nukes for either political or economic reasons aside as Anti Ship weapons (so no planet killers).

4- The Alien civilization is Humanoid (they're basically elves), number around 90 Billion over 100~ ish planets, have a slowish pace of technological advancement due to cultural reasons (but still progresses, so no creative sterility), but their military is at early 21st century levels due to lack of significant military need aside to squash ethnic strife and seperatist movements/rebellions.

Speculation begins!

Oh and:

5- The aliens had contacted us and was in significant trade relations with "us" for a several years prior to hostilities and several million had immigrated over to Earth (being freer society on average to their own), they have no interest in invading Earth as we'ld be too difficult to attack and there's nothing to gain and we're too far to meddle with their own insurrections. Then they had a civil war and the secessionists turn to us for help in exchange for FTL technology.

This is probably important, we're "aware" of them and they're "aware" of us and had some regular contact, this way plenty of them will speak English for the sake of the story.

I haven't been on in a while, who'se Jeff again?

Sounds interesting...but sadly, I already have two book writing projects underway, in addition to my full-time job.

Good luck...one of my books is the sequal to the Dragon's Fury Series, set 150+ years later in space, after the discoveryof FTL technology by humanity.

It will be called,

The United States of Earth and
THE WAR FOR KNOWN SPACE

Gollevainen??? Sadly he's not very active in the forum anymore. In fact he's not visited here since January 27th this year. If you want to find him go to the shipbucket forum. He's an administrator.

Sure, ask away. You could use this thread right here, or the messaging capability on SD> Great resources include Popeye, Norfolk, Obin Wan Russel, tphuang, etc., etc.

I have Gollevainen on my MSN and play Europa Universalis III on just about a weekly basis :D

Now I do have a question thats been budding my for a while although its not related to the story, do .50 cal machine guns, like the kinds on em HUMVEEs lack iron sights? Bad Company 2 seems to simply you just point it in the direction and use tracer fire to find your target; Project Reality had something akin to actual iron sights.
