Russia aparently is planning a new heavy icbm. Right now they have ss-18 satan and ss-19 stilleto (i think ss-20 was a mistake of the author). Do you think its economically feasible for russia to do it? developing something like the satan shouldnt be easy or cheap, IMO. Russia certainly wont built it to the numbers of satan.



And what about china? do you think that they should take a look at heavy icbms ? fixed icbms are cheaper than mobile icbms. Does china have the capability to do it?

Finally, does anyone has any ideia what happened to df-41? we have had any news for a long time. Is it really cancelled?

I don't know what to make of that. After all the announcements about new Super Flankers, aircraft carriers and so on, it sounds like just more bragging about new mil tech.
But, aside from the troubled Bulava SLBM, the land based ICBMs like Topol-M and the late RS-24 seem to work pretty well so far. So the big missile tech seems something the russians seems to get along with, especially since there's constant design work going on and there's no long brakes in building them.
Another heavy ICBM by 2020, probably doable, but I'd guess for prestige mainly, and not really to fill the ranks for a usefull differance.

I personally don't think that there is a need for an arms race. They only need things that are feasible, cost effective and does the job in protecting their country. Being immobile is just crying for it to be destroyed. As for China having the capability to do it, only time will tell. However I wouldn't be doubting them as they have been very consistent with their military tech proving their doubters wrong over and over again.

The Russian's missiles program had been very advance right from the start of cold war, and although they are falling behind in terms of cash at present moment, but their oil reserve would pull them out of that poverty soon. So it is perfectly alright for them to start development of this new missile, which I believe is a must, because of the advancement of anti-missile systems around the world. The Russian needed an insurance that no one would dare messed with them because no defence system could knock out their new missiles.

As for China, she needed these systems too. DF-41 is a good system which I believe they are developing still (in secret). This system would be an insurance against potential advasaries that traditionally had very powerful offensive capability but was too far a reach for China's current mobile missile system.

However at present moment, it would not be too wise to shout out the existence of such a program because of the sudden introduction of many programs like the modernisation of the Navy with inclusion of new destroyers, aircraft carrier/s (soon) and more submarines, modernisation of air force - inclusion of J-10, J-10B(soon), J-11B and soon the J-20. And if the world knows of her DF-41 program being active, it will cause some panicking (although there are many spectaculation at present moment), and mark an arm race in this region, thus distabling the entire region.

Deploying aircraft carriers will cause much more uproar than ICBMs. China has had ICBMs for decades. Not so with aircraft carriers.

That is correct. However most of China's ICBM couldn't actually reach US mainland... the only one that had the full capability to do it was DF-5 (which was a liquid fuel ICBM) that was launched from silo. US was not too worried about this missile because of the time it would take to prepare and launch this missile.

However with the induction of DF-41, it will be quite a different story and raise again to the big China Threat theory.

Plus with so many new weaponries being inducted or in advance phases of development (notably - the JL-2, nuclear submarines, ASBM, etc) China would not want to add oil to fire, by telling the world of her DF-41 missiles and its development or induction phases.

Sometime the good thing had to wait. And the world at this moment is already wowed at the maiden flight of the J-20 and the soon to come carrier.

DF-31A can easily reach most USA. Jl-2A also can reach part of USA

China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), the nation's largest missile weaponry manufacturer, is set "to complete research, production and delivery of this new generation of missile by 2015," the China News Service reported Thursday.

The new missile would be part of a network forming a solid defense system allowing for total coverage in both defense and attack, and capable of dealing with various threats from land, sea, air, space as well as cybernetic attacks, according to the report.

The report, however, did not provide any further details of the new missile.

A military source close to the development, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the Global Times yesterday that "The subject under development is a medium- and long-range conventional missile with a traveling distance of as far as 4,000 kilometers."

Sometimes it is difficult to tell how much of what the 2nd Artillery puts out in press releases is self promotion around inter service rivalries and how much refers to actual functioning hardware. I tend to take their claims with some doubt unless there is a demonstration of capability.

The article is not referring to the DF-41. 4000 km is far below ICBM range.
