9 Hong Kong tourist dead in Manila hostage shootout

Maybe but..

The greater question is why the MPD did not take down the sniper when they surely had a clear shot at him?. Look at the photos.

Perhaps his comrades in arms did not want to be the ones to gun down a fellow, albeit, disgraced officer. All in all the Manila PD botched the whole ordeal. Period.

They didn't have to gun him down, just look at how close their negotiators managed to get to the guy!

He was carrying an M16, and he could not have hoped to bring it up to get a shot off if the guy in the orange shirt jumped him.

Not standard tactics, but when the hostage taker offer you a golden opportunity like that, a trained professional is expected to take it.

I agree! By "shot" in American slang English I meant any chance to take him down. Heck that one negotiator was so close to him he could have tazed him.

A shot means they had a chance.

Don't know if the Philippine police even have a taser, even if they have, I doubt they actually know how to use it effectively. I mean, look at the police's sloppy attitude towards the hostage taker, smiling and laughing as if they are talking to an old friend.

Well... whatever said now would not bring those dead back alive... what should have, could have, must have... didn't happen.

The bottomline, the Philippine polices seriously needed alot of training and equipment...

Seriously a lot of training..... Even if they cannot afford frame charge equipment.... I am sure they have money to get some mirrors, some glass breaking hammers (those small ones with a pointed end designed specifically to kill glass.) , and definitely some ladders!

If they have tear gas, I would think they have funds to get flashbangs... and the way they threw them in was absolutely disappointing...

A question: how much suspending media coverage going to help? The bus didn't have satellite TV I assume.

It was a direct transmission from the TV station. A usual antenna will do.

I am wondering if it is possible for the Philippine police to at least block media transmission to a designated area only (in this case - the bus). So whoever inside the bus is actually closes to the outside world and would not know what the fxxk is happening out there.

I think it's possible to jam the transmission within a small area.

If TV transmission is similar to that of AM radio, all they have to do is to bring in some live wires.

Or a quick word with the media to deplay their 'live' coverage by 10, 15mins could have made a massive difference.

The police just didn't have a clue about anything and failed to control everything.
