Could just be a technology demonstrator using the proven Z9 airframe to test out dedicated attack helo concepts, designs and technology, which was later applied to the WZ10.

Alternatively, it could just be an attempt to mod the Z9 into a dedicated attack helo, but the performance was found wanting so the project was abandoned in favour of the WZ10.

around 2006 ,a full mock up was seen in guangzhou, likely a display model. painted in standard PLA color,(rather than PLAAF color),the mock up model carry 8 inert HJ-9 ATGM.
axccording to back issue of top81.com, in the early 90's China obtain a single pakistani AH-1 cobra for technical evaulation.what they learned may applied on Z-19.

Maybe I am missing something, but I dont see anything on the image posted on Chinese Military Aviation other than a Z-9W. I doesnt look like it has tandem seats or anyting different than just a normal Z-9W (including the flat nose).

The Z9 also seem to have a mast-mounted radar pod attached. This could be the long rumored MMW radar the PLA has been developing for its future WZ10 upgrade version.

So whats the consensus on Z-19? Is it an active (and hence existing) program? I guess one of the driving forces could be to have something available for the export market. Not everyone may be able to afford to some of today's attack helicopters owing to their higher costs, such as AH-64D, Tiger and T-129. There is a deficit of lighter weight options that would directly succeed the AH-1F/S series. I know of AH-1Z Viper which will be available in a few years, but besides that, I can't name any firm options. Although South Africa's ATE did begin work on its "New Attack Helicopter" program in late 2008, which I believe is in league of AH-1Z in terms of size.

It would serve as a nice replacement of Z-9W in the PLA's hi-lo combo strategy with WZ-10 at the high-end.

Kinda imagine Z19 used for air combat against other helos, being lighter & more agile and all that.

The attack role falls naturally onto the heavier heavier Z10.
