OMG come on people. All the time we spent on a shipwreck and explosives, it's time to relax ourselves with the world's favorite sport --- soccer!!!
It's world cup people!! Let's talk about it!!

So............. which one's your favorite team? Who are you cheering for? And where are you gonna be watching? And which games are you planning to watch?

Not only here is for discussions of countries vs countries without fear of nukes, we can discuss about after-game debriefings or whatever happen during these 2 exciting months!!

Now let's get the ball rollin'!!:rofl:

It's also the only sport we Chinese won't get too patriotic about...we knew we never stand a chance anyways LOL. Interesting how with 1.3billion of us to pick, we still can't put together a decent team eh?:china:

Not in North America..But it is becoming more popular.

I'm not a fan of soccer but a casual observer. I of course hope the US side wins..a couple of games.

Things I do not understand about soccer.

1) The groupings method of points..WTH??
2) Why are ties allowed? WTH
3) Why is the trophy so small?
4) Why do the players act is if they are dieing after a foul and then magically spring to life once the referee makes a decision?
5) Why are the SA fans making that awful racket??
6) Is there such a thing as a club soccer World Cup?
7) How do they keep the Field/pitch in such magnificent condition?
8) If soccer is so popular why does the National Football League have the highest average attendance of any sports league in the World?? 68,000 per game..

lol hi popeye
i can't answer most of your questions, but i do know the answer to 7.)
the field is made of fake grass, which is why they're always green.

but here are some interesting facts about soccer though...

1. soccer is one of those sports where you can end up with riot police showing down due to riots and demonstrations after a game
2. the field can get very wet, to the point one time lightning struck the field and everyone on the field got shocked by the current.(but they didn't die)

Last night when watching the NBA finals, during the half-time, the commentators said that everyone in the world is so eager to watch the US-UK match this Saturday. I was surprised to hear that. I don't follow soccer that much, but my impression is that the US team is not that good. So is this another of "com'on people, let's all watch ABC" type of commercial thingy? or the US is getting good?

They are improving but they're still not that good. The main thing is that Americans always love a country vs country matchup, even if it's a sport they don't particularly care for, and it's perfect timing too with all the hate against British Petroleum going on right now.

The 4th question is funny. :D That's why they're saying some drama acting experience helps in football (soccer in U.S.).

On the first and second question. The counting of points only happens in the first round. A draw gives one point to each of the 2 playing teams. A winning team gets 3 points. A losing team zero points. The number of goals scored against and goals conceded also figures in the scoring when there's a tie in the counting of the points. The top 2 teams of the 4 teams in the group will move on to the second round. In the second round, a tie or draw is always settled with penalty shootouts, and only the winning teams move on to the next stages starting with the quarter-finals and then moving on to the semi-finals and final.

Thanks guys... I'm not so sure about the answer about the field/pitch. I read something about that some time ago. I'm sure FIFA requires real grass for WC action.

For #8, I'm assuming your average NFL stadium is larger than your average soccer stadium. Individually, some soccer fields are much larger than most American soccer fields, but take a look at this:

Look at how many football stadiums the US has that are much larger than the stadiums for other sports, especially US college football.

FIFA doesn't actually require real grass. in fact, south africa the first world cup that uses artificial grass because the natural grass there... well, sucks too much.

to answer some questions:
1) Im not too sure what you are asking here, but a team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 point for a lose. At the end of group games (round robin within the group), the 2 teams with highest points advances to elimination round. If there's a tie in points, then the number of net goals (goals scored - goals conceded) is used to rank the teams.

2) What's wrong with ties?

3) LOL... that's like comparing post counts

4) Because they try to get a foul for the other team, some players are really evil. Or they are trying to get the time passed, this is especially apparent when their team is winning and it's in over-time. This is why soccer timing system should be like basketball... where you pause the timer whenever there's a foul etc.

5) racket? o_O

6) There's the UEFA (Union of European Football Association) Champions League, where the European clubs fight for the top spot.

7) Some fields are really crappy (hence why they are introducing artificial grass this year for the first time in world cup history); in fact, i remember the 2008 Olympics soccer final had pretty bare field (this was in the bird's nest too...).

8) Hmm... because there's only 1 american football league in the world, and there are so many top-tier soccer leagues, so the attendance gets spread out.

I've been wondering why soccer is not big in the States. Many people do play it. The term "soccer mom" is so well-known, the sport has got to be played by many many people to gain this kind of fame (or infamy). But a few adults like it. I heard a theory when talking with my colleague who came from South Korea. He suggested that it's because of the fact that a soccer game has no time-outs and does not stop in the middle of a game (except half-time), thus no chance of commercials while being broadcasted on TV. So from a TV station's point of view, when showing a soccer game, they lose money since they won't be able to show commercials, which would typically take up about 20 minutes per hour of TV time, to the viewer. With no many soccer games on TV, people get little exposure to the sport and this effect then snow-balls and leads to little understanding of the game and the ignorance of the sport. This, to me, sounds like a good theory and explains why soccer is not big here even though many people, especially kids play it.
