Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

anyone think the 095 or 096 would be a cruise missile capable SSGN similar to US's .

ALso, China should take note and get rid of holes on the side of 094 like shown below it doesn't have those holes.

I have a rather silly question to us, pardon me for it, cos I am really not at all experience with submarine technology. The question is... how to submarine actually communicate with each other, with surface vessels and with land bases?

well, surfacing is one way, but for submerged, this is a good one to read

Thanks Tphuang. That is a good read. However it did open up more questions I have regarding the underwater communication problem.

1) Does different salinity of the water actually affect the ELF system?
2) How about the density of the water and the pressure of it.
3) Since the communication system is done in an extremely low frequency, wouldn't range be a problem.
4) Plus this system is good for communication between submarine in a wolf pack, but can it also be utilise for communication with surface crafts such as warships and land bases.
5) How can the submarine actually receive information from satellites?

Don't know.

Level of attenuation is proportional to the frequency. In other words, the lower the frequency, the less attenuation there is, and the further the signal can travel.

4) Plus this system is good for communication between submarine in a wolf pack, but can it also be utilise for communication with surface crafts such as warships and land bases.
As far as I know, ELF is used for communication between the land base and the submarine only.

5) How can the submarine actually receive information from satellites?
Given that satellite is not big enough to fit an ELF antenna, I would venture to guess that the submarine has to be closed to the surface.

ELF requires a frequency so long, the antennas are as long as entire power lines. As a matter of fact, they maybe using power lines or formerly of such.
